We are going through my grandmother's extensive doll and antique collection and need some help identifying this artifact.  All we know is that is was given as a gift from someone who traveled the world.  Any help identifying this will be very helpful.

This looks like some used in rituals in Mexico and South American/Columbian countries.  Can't remember the name for it (thought it was a mourning or death doll but that isn't correct).
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!
