I need information on this coin,Julius Caesar ancient coin, not perfect round,19.9grams,I can't make out every letter but I can make out the name,"Caesar",the back has,"SC" with what look like a soldier, about 12 years ago a man gave me the contents of the junk on his porch, while sorting thur it I found this coin inside an old clothes box, don't know much about it,hope someone can id this coin and tell me what it is called.I had it on another site about 4 years ago.Just need some input before trying to sell coin.Coin dealers charged a lot to check it out.I have 2 pictures with flash and 2 without flash.

This is not Julius Caesar, but Emperor Vespasianus (69-79). On the back is the goddess Roma. What is the size and the material? The genuine one is made of bronze... Again my first impression is that it is a cast imitation...
-
I'm not sure what it is made of,it doesn't stick to magnet. 1 3/8"
-
Looks a bit thick for a coin !!

The bronze coin Mat refers to weighs 2.79 grams; whereas yours weighs 19.9 grams. The diameter should be 0.64 inches; whereas yours is 1-3/8". I'm not sure what yours is made of but does not appear to be bronze. I don't think it is a coin.

I agree but may have been passed off as a coin !!
-
Mart....a BIG, HEAVY one at that!
-
The coin is a Sestertius, and the weight is even a bit too low. See here a genuine one: https://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=1064480&AucID=2088&Lot=59&Val=5bdf5092a256fc16955f551729f72228 You can see a lot of small "dots" on the surface of your coin, which would not be there if it was struck. They are a clear sign that it was cast.
-
Mart and Sopie Marie, you would be surprised to see how big and heavy Roman coins can be: https://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=1064480&AucID=2088&Lot=59&Val=5bdf5092a256fc16955f551729f72228
PS: This example is cast, which is typical for early Roman coinage. By the time of Vespasianus, coins were struck.

LOL !! With what they wore back then,, how big were their pockets ?? Can`t imagine having a pocket full of that change !! ;D
-
"Keep the change" really meant something back then!
-
Lol, yes, and sorry, I posted the same link two times. This is the REALLY heavy coin I meant: https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/items/1332696

Mat,
Again, I learned something new! I didn't realize the weight to some of those coins. They would make great paper weights ha! But, seriously....did they carry them in money bags, bury them, and/or keep them inside for the servants to look after in wealthy homes?
-
Hey SophieMarie !! I am thinking man purse !! That really sounds weird !! But thats what the TV shows call them !!
-
Found a model of ancient Roman "Man Purse":

-
I don`t think there is a man alive in the state of Texas that would be caught carrying a purse !! At least not in my neighborhood !! But havent been in any major city in a while so things may have changed last few decades !!
-
Here is a statuette of Mercury holding a purse: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2013/antiquities-n09056/lot.42.html The Romans also had "arm purses" made of bronze: http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/foxweb/huntsearch/DetailedResults.fwx?collection=all&searchTerm=138042&mdaCode=GLAHM&browseMode=on
-
Mmmm,,,Mercury should have bought himself a loin cloth with his coins !! Looking like that would be embarrassing in the mens locker room !!
Now how does a bronze purse work ?? Coins just lay in the curve ??
-
You could open the lid and put the coins inside. Here is another example: http://britisharchaeology.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/collections/england-neast.html
-
Oh !! Lid didn`t show up well in the first pic !!
-
Very interesting! Hat, sandals and a purse....who would have thought it?
-
And naked as a jay bird as my Dad would have said !! ;D Made it easy for the muggers !!

Well, At least that one is a little more manly Rauville !! Can`t go wrong with Davy Crockett !!

Easy for muggers, no way! One "boink" in the head with the man purse and they would be out cold....

Why of course, Davy Crocket carried a …. a … um, …. um, …. purse, .....especially when he wasa visiting in Texas. Matter of fact, he seldom left home without it. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
But Davie’s purse actually looked more like this one, to wit:

Or this one .......

Ok, Cogar....what's the item in last photo that looks like a wooden paddle?
-
I actually don't know, but a "wild" guess is that it might be a "turkey call". :P :P
Like so ............

You do have a point there !!
-
I think you are right Cogar !! That would be the easiest and most prevalent game !!
-
Yup a turkey call.... I knew that - NO, not really! :)
-
Interesting thread! Yep that would be called "naked as a jay bird"! Daniel Boone wore a leather Cross-body sling bag with top on his left shoulder and pouch on right side.
If you go back and look at the Hermes statue that Mat posted, he is carrying a pigskin money bag!
