Antique Questions Forum / Re: Old train station sign...I think.
« on: February 22, 2010, 10:00:45 am »
Many, if not most, depot identification signs were made of wood.  I'm leaning toward that being a depot sign.  You might want to look for a depot real photo postcard of that town and see what the actual signage looked like.  These photo/postcards appear on eBay a lot.  In the old days the railroads spared no expense.  I've seen iron whistle signs, RR warning signage and even fence posts made of iron.  You may want to send a better picture to this website and ask your questions.  http://railroadiana.org/ but don't ask for value at this site.

I would think it would be very difficult to sell something that large.  Just the cost of a low-boy, semi tractor and crane would be astronomical.

Hi jacking the post again. Railman I don't know I never asked. it's car shows only and was appraised at $65,000.
It must be an AC Ford Cobra.  Shelby Cobra's with the small engine start at close to a million dollars in decent shape.  The big engine Cobra prices are priced astronomically.

1. The Orpheus Saloon in downtown San Jose. It was a notorious saloon with a brothel upstairs and the girls would all be on display in the upper windows. It even had a marble tiles running up the front of the bar and a gutter running the length of it. This served as both a spittoon and a place where patrons could relieve themselves without having to step away from the bar! The old tiles are still visible though a panel in the floorboards. Sadly the building has been gutted. If "I Were Queen" I would gather up whatever I could find in the way of relics from the days when the street it is on (El Dorado Street was renamed Post Street in an effort to clean up its image) which was San Jose's red light district, and open a small museum dedicated to preserving the history of El Dorado Street. Good or bad, it's still history and very few people know what this place was like back in it's wild west days during the 1870's through about 1910.

2. A 1930 Bentley 8 Litre.

More on this later!

If money were no propblem, I think I'd get a duesenburg (sp?).

The large engine?

No such thing as an 'infinite' amount of money but, if I had a lot, it would be a 429 Shelby Cobra sports car.  Next, would be a luxury log cabin in Jackson Hole, WY with a view to die for.  Next would be antiques and paintings of the American West.  You asked...  ;D

I've researched Apollo and nothing looks quite like this.  There is one with a box surrounding the name "Apollo".  This is a small box and it's not sterling.

Most railroad watches are lever set.  The glass/bezzel need to be removed to pull the lever before you set the stem for a time adjustment.  Most railroad watches are stem at the 12:00 position.  Most rr watches are bold arabic numbers.  Most rr watches are at least/minimum 19 jewels.  VERY old rr watches can deviate these rules.  These rules came into effect around the late 1890's and very early 1900's.

I'm guessing but I'd look for a saddle maker's mark or signature.  Many times it's hidden.  Even if the saddle is a bust, many times 'old gents' sometimes have more goodies or know where they are.

It's a circa 1950's weight loss machine.  The overweight person could sit on it as it revolves, lie with the stomach on the machine, well you get the picture.  It wasn't cheap and didn't reduce very much fat... ;D
