Antique Questions Forum / What is this type of woodworking bench called?
« on: November 05, 2011, 04:09:48 pm »
Okay, it must have a real name. I have a woodworker's bench. You push down with your feet on the pegs and it clamps your workpiece. Anyone know what this is actually called?

Antique Questions Forum / Antique clock case - any ideas of manufacturer
« on: October 30, 2011, 06:03:26 pm »
I haven't had any cool finds in a while, but I did get one recently which is a tad annoying. I bought what appears to be an antique ceramic/porcelain clock case. I would like to put in a time appropriate clock mechanism, but I do not even know the manufacturer or approximate date of this piece. The only clue I have is the first letter of a signature on the bottom of the case. By the wear on the underside, it appears to be quite old, but without more info, I am unsure how to proceed. Any clock experts out there? I have looked at over 10 000 images on the net, and have yet to come up with this exact clock case.

Antique Questions Forum / Giant copper urn??? What is it???
« on: October 21, 2011, 04:29:40 pm »
There was an antique store going out of business and they held an auction last week. I made out like a bandit, but I did purchase one item that has me totally stumped. It is a large copper urn like object. The owner of the store thought it had some religious affiliation, but I can't see that. Anyway, it is 25 inches high and 17 inches in diameter. I cannot see any maker's mark. There may be on the bottom, but I am unsure if I should clean this piece up or leave it with all the green stuff on it! It looks hand hammered, with very nice detail. It is hinged and the top half opens up. I have searched online, but since I am unsure of what it is for, I have been unsuccessful in identifying it.

ANy ideas?

I also have a few other pieces I may need help with, but I am still trying to work those out on my own. The research is half the fun, but this time I am stumped!

Antique Questions Forum / Old press, but for what?
« on: October 09, 2011, 04:01:34 pm »
I picked up a box of antique tools at a garage sale, and it contained some kind of press in it. The overall length is 15", height is 7". The receiving end of the press is hollow, the press part that comes down is solid. Looks like you would have put something into the receiving end, and press something down onto it. The question is, what?

The only markings on it are the remnants of the word Patented on the side. First three letters are worn off, but you can tell this is what it said.

Antique Questions Forum / Pheasant Knife rests - need some help dating
« on: September 23, 2011, 07:28:22 am »
Hi All

I have a pair of really interesting knife rests i am trying to find out about. There are absolutely no markings on these thins. I have a large lighted magnifying glass and have gone over these extremely carefully. Nothing Marked anywhere. I have seen some online that claim to be Nickel plated, but the carving on the head is nowhere near as detailed as these ones.

I am trying to determine:
1) WHere they may have been made , and by what company
2) Potential age
3) Guess as to material they are made of

All help appreciated. I really like these, the detail is great, so I would like to learn more about them.

Thanks

Antique Questions Forum / Silver Maker's mark from 1855?
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:54:18 pm »
Hi

I am trying to date a Creut Castor I have. I have included a picture of the markings on it. I have not taken a picture of the piece yet as it looks like it is made of dull pewter. It will require some elbow grease to clean up! I did a very small section and it is nice triple plate underneath, but it will be a few hours work to get it looking how I want!

May not be a clear picture, but it says:
R.W. & Co.
Manufacturers
Triple Plate
021

So, obviously it is made by Robert Wallace and CO. From the research & have done, his company name was Robert Wallace Company in 1855. In 1865, it was re-organized under the name name Wallace, Simpson, & Co.

Now, my question: Would the R.W.& Co. mark be used after it re-organized to become Robert, Simpson, & Co? If not, then that should allow me to confidently date this piece as being from 1855-1865. If not, how long would he still use the old mark? I have heard that some companies kept using old marks even after a name change. Specifically, someone informed me of that about the Simpson, Hall, & Miller Co. (Now, this was told to me over the internet, so I am not stating that is true, just something I was told!)

Hoping it is from the 1855-1865 period, I do not have one that old yet! My Oldest is from around 1895. Once I get the piece cleaned up, I will add a picture to this thread.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Antique Questions Forum / Trying to date 2 pieces of sterling
« on: September 14, 2011, 12:18:45 pm »
Okay, going through old silver today, trying to catalog some stuff. I have an old sterling makeup compact. Only mark is sterling and then a B in a six sided box. I cannot track this symbol down. Anyone ever seen this one? Aging it might be impossible! Kind of hard to figure a value if I can't guess its age!

Also have a sterling thimble in a jar and what appears to be a sterling Tea thingy. I have the mark from the silver tea thingy below. Just says sterling silver, made in USA, in the middle the letters S.C.S.C. and the what looks like the digits 10, but sideways and tiny. Any ideas.

I tried to take a pic of the thimble mark, but wayyy too small for me to get a clear shot.

Thansk Again!

Antique Questions Forum / Napkin rings from 1899
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:29:40 am »
Almost put these in a garage sale! Anyway, i had no problem with the makers mark, but just wondering what the value might ne of a pair of Napkin Rings from 1899?

Maker is Richard Richardson, has the sheffield mark, lion passant mark, and stylized g from 1899. SOrry, I can't seem to capture a good shot of the maker's mark. Have included an overall shot.

Checking online, pricing is anywhere from $10 to $200, so I want to be careful not to give them away, and also not to overprice them. Fairly plain design, so I do not expect much.

Thanks

Antique Questions Forum / Maker's Mark - Eastern Europe????
« on: September 13, 2011, 03:46:00 pm »
Hi

Just going through some of my things, and have a copper bowl which I never found anything about. I really like it, (my girlfriend thinks it looks like junk!), but I have no idea who made it. I have researched the Mark, but have had no success. Looks eastern European to me, but that is a guess! Any ideas?

Antique Questions Forum / Age of a Hall Simpson Miller Creut Castor
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:18:10 pm »
Okay, I have a Creut (Cruet?) castor made by Hall Simpson Miller & Co. I know they were absorbed into another company in 1898, and ceased to exist. The problem I have is there is only the maker's mark, and the # 201 on the piece. ANyone know how I can date it?

Antique Questions Forum / Figurines message borad - any good ones?
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:08:17 pm »
I have some questions which fall under figurines rather than Antiques. I have searched for a good forum/message board for collectible figurines, but cannot locate one that has any traffic. Does anyone know of  one?

The reason I need to find one is that I have bought some really interesting pieces from the godson of one of the prominent artists from Royal Doulton. These pieces are expensive and sought after in Europe, but there seems to be no following that I can find in North America. The pieces are by Kevin Francis Ceramics and Peggy Davies. I believe the Kevin Francis piece is one of the first ones they ever made. Not an antique, but if I can sell it, I will try!

Antique Questions Forum / Wedgwood Vase - Style/pattern
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:29:41 am »
Hi All

Came across a wedgewood vase in a lot of ceramics I am picking up. Anyone know what the Pattern name or style is of this? I have not picked the stuff up yet, and have identified all of the other wedgwood, but this one has me stumped. I do not have a picture of the underneath unfortunately.

Antique Questions Forum / Wavecrest jewel box - Destroyed the value???
« on: September 10, 2011, 04:26:01 pm »
Figured I would take a shot at this Wavecrest Jewelery/handkerchief box. The thing is really awesome, but has issues. The box itself is 6 1/2 inches long by 5 1/2 deep, by 4 high. It has the wavecrest mark on the bottom. (I could post an additional picture, but based on the rest of the post, you will guess why I didn't bother!)

Issues:
1) The hinges have come out of the top portion. Is it possible to get it repaired?
2) This is the big problem....there is a crack along one end, and it has been badly repaired. TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE EPOXY ON THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR OF THE BOX.Has the value of this piece been totally degraded down to nothing?

I picked this up years ago, and because of the crack, I forgot all about it. I was online doing some checking on other stuff today and came across some Wavecrest stuff for sale, and it is fairly expensive glass ware! Do I have a pretty box with a crack in it, or a sellable item???? I think I already know the bad news, but figured I would share my grief with others.
