Antique Questions Forum / Wooden Plant Stand
« on: June 28, 2017, 01:18:38 pm »
This was upstairs in my parent's house (which I have now inherited) and had a cactus garden in a shallow red clay dish. I surmise that at one time it had a marble top since what is there now is rough-looking wood (more than likely water damaged) with a screw in the middle. It's 34" tall and the top is 12.5" square. It whispers "Eastlake" to me, but I can't tell if it a "real" antique or a repro or from what wood it's made. Several people that have seen it offered to buy it, but I don't know what would be a reasonable price to ask. Any comments?

I've had these pieces for years, can't say exactly how long, but I did some collecting in the 1970s and bought mostly at rummage and garage sales. I was looking to identify the maker of some pieces from the marks on them. Any help appreciated.

I found info on the marking that helps with the date, but I would like to know what pattern this is.

Antique Questions Forum / not interested
« on: October 24, 2015, 09:25:18 am »
I was on a fall foliage trip when I stopped at an antique shop. A sign in the window stated "I'm always buying". I chatted with the proprietor a while and mentioned that I had inherited my parents estate and was looking to sell many items. He said to let him know what I was selling. So I sent him photos by email with descriptions and what I was asking (see attached photos of the items). He mailed back a saying he wasn't interested in anything I was selling. Any idea why?

The one in the silver hunter's style case is a LaJour and probably fairly modern. I think the back unscrews (I wanted to see the works and serial number), but I turn and turn it but the back won't come off. Also, the cover won't stay shut.

The one in the open face gold case is a Hampden. The back opens on a hinge, but under the outer case is another backing I'm not sure how to open, either.

Any opinions on these (without seeing the innards)? I may follow up later with more photos if I take them to a local jeweler to show me how to open them - I don't want to force anything.

Anyone venture to give a ballpark value on this Bassett dresser/bureau/chest of drawers? What wood?

Antique Questions Forum / Antiques or not?

I stopped at a neighborhood estate sale yesterday out of curiosity. The person that seemed to be in charge was selling these pieces as antiques and priced as such. I took some pics and measurements until she told me to desist. I said I wanted to research them. Now if these were legit antiques, why was she so adamant about my taking photos? It made me curious so I'd like some opinions on the value these and guess how much she was asking. Both pieces have damage to the wood (varnish damage on top shelf of bookcase and scratches on the hexagonal-shaped table, and the back of the bookcase looks like it was replaced or repaired at some point).

A post card featuring Wilf Carter (a.k.a. Montana Slim). I believe that the writing on the back was printed and not hand-written. It is postmarked 1938. Also, a V-Mail letter postmarked Dec, 10, 1943. (recipients name removed in photos). Any value to these?

I've been helping to clean out my uncle's apartment when he's been placed in an assisted care facility. I found this open-faced pocket watch and it still works, although it looks very dirty. I don't know how to set the time. I tried pulling out the stem and turning it, but that just winds it. I asked my uncle if he wanted me to inquire about getting it cleaned. I wanted to know about how much that would cost, if it would be worth it and to whom should I take it? Also, how do I set the time?

Antique Questions Forum / Castle in Moonlight Painting
« on: June 18, 2015, 10:24:15 am »
Someone told me this is a "reverse" painting done on glass, then framed. My mother acquired it about 25 years ago at an estate sale. I believe she paid over $100 at that time (would be over $200 in today's money). I have an interested buyer and when I told him what was paid for it, he blew air, rolled his eyes and exclaimed, "She really over-paid!" He offered be $25 which I refused. I think the ornate gilded wood frame is even worth a piece of change. It's fairly large (approx. 27 x 31" - outer frame). What would be a fair market value?

I've finally gotten around to doing inventory on the stoneware I inherited. Too many photos to post here, but I put pics of most here:

Any idea of their value?

Antique Questions Forum / Stoneware bowl with large star mark

This bowl is 10.75" diameter and 4" deep. It' had a dark brown glaze on the interior. On the bottom is a five-pointed star with the words THE GERMAN in it. I am going batty trying to find this mark or the pottery company that made it. Anyone know?

Antique Questions Forum / Mystery backstamp
« on: March 17, 2015, 09:03:47 am »
I found this in the cellar of my parents estate. At first I thought it might be Limoges. Unfortunately, it had been cracked in two and badly mended with some kind of hideous dark brown glue. I soaked it in water overnight and tried to scrub the old glue off, with not much success, especially on the back. I re-glued it, but the crack goes right through the faint mark. I think it says Wallendam Austria with the picture of some castle or building. I couldn't find anything about Wallendam pottery, but I may be reading it incorrectly. Anyone recognize the backstamp?

I discovered a cache of embroidered and lace antimacassars and a lace tablecloth. I'd planned on putting them out at my estate sale this year, but I have no idea what would be reasonable prices to ask. Photo caption have the dimensions and the number of pieces in each set. Help! Thanks.

Antique Questions Forum / Copper Pot
« on: February 24, 2015, 10:49:55 am »
This looks like-hand-beaten copper. It's 5.6" tall and has an Asian looking motif on the outside. No marks that I can discern and has some oxidation in places. If I put it out for sale this year, what would be a reasonable price to ask?
