I don't know how old this is or what kind of vehicle it went on but I'm hoping someone does. It is marked Signal Stat 4200 Series SAE IPRST 85 DOT. Its 5.5" across.
-
Well, The DOT would mean Department of Transportation,,85 could be the year made !! I would think it could go on any of their equipment or trucks !! I just put "signal stat 4200 series" in google and several come up !! Just called a vehicle safety light !!
-
I find the same info as Mart. All I can add is that SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. It is a nice item.
-
Thanks for the help both of you. Do you think it might be from a railroad crossing sign?
-
my thoughts were of a railway...item,..possibly on a level crossing
-
I think they could have been used on anything !! Temporary closings where wooden barriers are across the roadway would be a possibility !!
-
It could have been used on a truck. I've seen them before as an aftermarket accessory.

Looks like you have the lenses?

A lot of cars built pre-war had taillamps that resembled bicycle lamps by today's standards. Some people realized how dangerous they were and purchased aftermarket ones like yours. I've seen them used on classic pickups, rat rods, and even a couple of motorcycles over the years. The most likely suspect is a 1930s pickup truck. In my experience, that is one of the more common vehicles to sport these.

When I was just starting with motorized vehicles years ago, the local highway patrol officer drove a pea green 1957 Ford with a red STOP light mounted on the side of the passenger side front fender.
I can still picture that darn light when he would pull up beside me and turn it on...about once a week!
