I bought this buffet at a garage sale on the weekend.I would love to know the age and anything else about it.
The drawers have very wide dovetailing. The bottom picture is more true to the colour of the wood...my camera was playing up.
I spent hours searching for one similar online...no joy!
Thanks
Anne

Need better pics !! Good square shot of front and of the dovetails, closeup of hardware and the back if possible !!

sometimes this mix of American/English..can be so confusing...over here we call this a sideboard, but you guys have adopted the French name, buffet...their both correct but its still confusing at times...
-
Guesses 1930s, +/- 10 yrs or so. This sideboard has several styles going at once, frame & panel, misssion, with the stiles through the top & william & mary tear drop pulls.
-
Odd blend isn`t it Jacon4 ??
-
This also has a homemade or even kit-like look to it.
-
Hmmm, no, not really. The Victorians started this trend in the late 19th century where its very common to have pieces with several different styles in the same piece. Sometimes this works visually and sometimes it doesnt though, thats for sure.
-
i,ve broken up a few of these in my time...my hungry 10kw woodburner..gobbles up pieces like this...and even as i speak its swallowing the remains of a 7ft ercol dining table that had no further use,....

I like the buffet style ,,but not fond of the hardware for this one !! I know they blended styles but have not seen this mix !! I think I would replace those with a simple craftsman style !!
-
I've got a smoking stand that is very similar to this buffet, including the door pull. It was homemade by a "garage craftsman" in the 1940s.
-
It looks like a craftsman style piece to me and very well made. The hardware on those pieces very often was odd for the style. We always picture heavy forged angular pulls but that was not always the case. It was up to the whim of the maker. I would look carefully over the entire piece for a mark. Look on the inside on the legs and anywhere else. Are there any dowels or through tenons holding it together? Can we see more pictures of the back and the drawer sides and bottom?. The finish in the pictures also looks washed out. Is it?

Thanks everyone for your interest in my little pride and joy. I guess it looks a bit rough
to some ...but I love it. Here are a few more pics.

and more

Escutcheons... key holes....a lot of good they,ll do...makes me believe they should,nt be there...they have been stuck on as an afterthought....
-
Now we can see it !! Much better !! I am thinking more age to this than previously thought !! Can you take a pic of the back ??
-
it does,nt matter what age it has...with those escutcheons doing nothing...its a piece of junk...
-
Wullie...be nice.
This style of mix-match is very popular these days. Now, not saying it will make the owner rich....but in today's mix n match of all styles in furniture, china, crystal.....it is a nice piece!
-
Thanks again. for your interest. Most of the doors have a keyhole.I have taken a photo of the back of the keyhole.
I have a feeling that it is the base of a dresser as there is a gap where the back meets the top. Also the back has obviously
been put on much later.
I really love it. My home is tastefully furnished....no junk that I can see.
I'm not really interested in value...just age.
I paid 140 aust dollars
Thanks again for input...this is an excellent site.

That is me being nice....I would,nt be me..if i did,nt say it as i see it.... :D

Thats most likely a replacement back since the oxidation of the edges does not match the back !! Better view of the pulls looks more in order with the style !! Love that honey color !! You did well with this purchase in my opinion !! I just don`t care for all the frou frou on some older furniture !! (Don`t like dusting it either) !! This can be mixed with a lot of styles !!

I bough a nice clock today to sit on my buffet/sideboard. Garage sale again
and only 10 dollars. It is working...ticking away nicely. Its going too fast though.
I opened the back and I think there is a bit(weight maybe) missing from the pendulum.
If I can buy one what size should I get? Is it around 1930s? Its made in Germany and has the numbers
188076 and PL 12 cm. I can turn on and off the sound of the pendulum. When I turn
it on it wont stop.....aaaah! Its a pretty sound though!

Annie, the picture of the back is too "fuzzy" to clearly see ..... but it looks like at the top of the mechanism is the "slow-fast" adjustment.
If so, it should be a moveable "dial" pointer ...... pointing between the letters "S" and "F" ......... and if your clock is "going too fast" .... then move that "pointer" a smidgen toward the "S" to slow it down a smidgen.

I like it !! Goes well with the buffet/sideboard !! I see what you mean by gap at top back,, its possible that there was a wooden back piece that came off or most likely had the screws stripped and didn`t tighten up any more so it was just taken off !! Wouldn`t have been but a few inches tall !! Look along that back edge and see if there are holes where it would have attached, if not there they may be under the new backboard !!

If Cogar's solution doesn't work for you, find a clock shop to supply you with the missing part.
