Title: Cake stand – identification please
Post by: cogar on December 15, 2012, 04:26:56 am

The wife purchased this at auction several weeks ago in a sort of box-lot with several other pieces of glass and all her attempts at trying to identify it – maker and/or pattern name – has failed.

Thus, any help in resolving its identity would sure be appreciated.

I do not know the name of the pattern but I have an old electric vanity lamp with the identical base. It is the oldest electric lamp I own that was made to be electric. It dates from the 1914 -1920 period. That is when the two prong plug and receptacle came into play in the home. So your cake plate dates from 1910-1920 and is American Pressed Glass. It is a very nice piece. I would use it. Try placing a compote on it for a great presentation for fritters and dip.

Early American glass pattern.  Wish I could help out with it....maybe ironlord or Wendy can chime in on this one!

Have seen a few pieces with this ring/wreath on it over the years.  Nice!!

Thank you, ....... and I probably should have told you that she had lready looked thru every one of her Pattern Glass books with no luck, ....... and a zillion PG patterns on the Internet and still no luck.

She even took it over to the WV Glass Museum at Weston (20 miles from here) and no one there knew ..... but told her they would look.

They were half-successful ...... and mailed her "copies" of E-mails they received from someone, but they were of a goblet (see pic below) with the same "Chevron" but a differen pattern.

Included was a "copy" of a title page from whence the goblet was listed:

AMERICAN AND CANADIAN GOBLETS
volume two
Doris and Peter Unitt

You can cee the Daisy in the bottom of the tumbler, ... thus "Daisy with Chevron", ..... but her stand has no Daisy ...... but a different pattern on the base.

And the pattern on the base is what has her frustrated, ..... which always happens when she can't find a name for a piece of glass she has.

So, until we find the correct name it's just a "Chevron Pedistal" cake stand or a "Chevron and ???xx???"  cake stand.  ;D ;D

Sorry new one to me also, did look a bit but came up short in my books.  I do believe I have seen this before though maybe at the antique mall.  If I do run into the name I will sure to remember this and post it.

Can someone please enlighten me..as to why it is so important..to have a name for a piece of glass...is,nt it enough to know what its purpose is..if its for your own use...e.g..tumbler. ..sherry glass, champagne flute.cake stand etc....I can understand the need if its for ornamental but..for house glass...??

When you are keeping the item it may not be as important, but it is our curiosity of wanting to know more about a treasure we have.  For me everything is for sale, and the name of the pattern, and or maker will be what can make the sale and even make it sale for a bit more.

When its for sale..I can understand the need..to know what you are selling..and the more info you have the better it could be...but.If i were in someones house and they gave me a whisky..I,d be more interested what kind it was rather than ask what make of glass it was...

Yes you did, ...... and it PO'ed my wife so much that after reading it she came up the steps in an irate mood to tell  me ..... "That bigwull is just ruining that forum cause he never has anything good to say about anything and I will never ask you to post another picture for me".

Then she mumbled something about "his pretty motorcyles" as she went on into the kitchen.

I like it. It is a novel piece with the circular section on the stem!

We are all curious...one of the reasons we are all here!

Wulllie, if you could see the size of rabbits here in Texas you would understand it wasn't unreasonable asking!  They are as large as cats!  Three types wild here:  Texsas Black Tail Jack Rabbit, grows to 23" and 9 - 10 lbs, the Swamp Rabbit - grow up to 21" and 8 pounds, Cottontail found in dessert 16 - 17" and appx 5 lbs.

Funny...there is a story of bunny climbing....
"Runaway rabbit who escaped from his hutch is rescued by firefighters after hopping up onto the ROOF of a three-floor block of flats
Logan, 3, left distraught when Barney the bunny escaped second-floor hutch
It's believed pet clambered up gutter outside flat in Southend and onto roof
Mother spent two hours trying to get him down with lettuce and carrots
Two firefighters went up with roof ladder and managed to corner rabbit

Hey Bigwull,
Why do you keep buying our used barrels that we make our sorry excuse for whiskey (bourbon) in? Aren't you afraid our used barrels will contaminate your whisky? Been having that affair with Nancy for a long time, have you?
