Isn't Daisy headquartered in Texas? I know Chicago was where they started, but I don't know if ice cream was ever one of their products. Love their sour cream.

Mart, being raised up in the country we had corn just about any way you can have it for breakfast! Especially when it was pickin' season!
But my favorite....GRITS!!!! (I love the twist they have put on it over the years Girls Raised In The South!!!! Grits Casserole, Cheese Grits, Southern Shrimp & Grits....

your grits....are like our porridge.....

Ahem.....EXCUSE ME!!!! Porridge IS NOT Grits!!!!
Your porridge is more like....oatmeal.... or cream of wheat....or cream of rice.
Grits are in a league of their own!!! I love yellow grits the best...but white grits are more commmon.

Corn cakes, johnny cakes fried in butter and syrup on top !! How well we know KC !! Picked about 150 ears this morning !!

Mart, I really miss Field Corn. These days the corn is so engineered to be so doggone sweet. I just can't find the regular, old fashioned corn! Even the farmer's markets here have the really sweet kind! :(
Been trying to find regular cornmeal lately....and all I can find is enriched. (If you mix cornmeal and grated garlic together and mix into soil it is a natural fungicide. The mulch we bought at Lowe's this year had lots of weeds and crud in it...so where I mulched is more work than where I didn't....so taking the last 25 bags back. Luckily only put out 30!) Going to order it by the trailer load again...cheaper as well.

Ya best be careful about some sources of "bagged" mulch because it could have termites in it.
-
if you want unsweetened corn....go to Germany.....they grow tons of it...and its only used for cattle feed.....

And ps: if you have a retail store that sells Amish foods/products .... you might surely find the cornmeal there.
-
Well, KC You are still out of luck !! You can`t find the old fashioned yellow dent and what is sold as yellow dent is a hybrid that we tried but had that black fungus that they like in Mexico !! Could have made a killing selling that stuff !! It is in the same class as truffles !! There is a guy not far from here that has his own portable mill and makes stone ground meal !! He is at all of the local festivals and at the Sulphur Springs Dairy show !! I will see if I can track him down for you !! I have used it and its great stuff !! You could order by mail I bet !! May have a website !!

Mart & Cogar, I went to the Shreveport, LA farmers market this morning...and low and behold there was an older guy that was selling fresh ground cornmeal!!!!!!!!!!! For a great price! He was a character (said his daughters won't use it and only use Jiffy corn mix! LOL).
He was horrified when he heard I was going to use it for the yard and encouraged me to make cornbread first! LOLOL
I bought enough to do the yard and eat plenty!!!
Thanks for the resources...I use lotsa' cornmeal! Catfish fries, spoon bread, fried green tomatoes, etc....
-
Fried green tomatoes are on the menu for next week here !! Will still try to find the guy here in case you need more !!
-
I,ve never tried them,..but would like to....
-
Shame on you Wullie !! Never tried fried green tomatoes ??? Surely someone grows them there !!
-
Yummm. If I was going home your way I would stop by Mart! :)
Thanks for finding out the name!!!
-

Nope!!....they only grow red tomatoes here....i,ve fried them....but not in batter....thats only for fish or tater fritters.....Avril enjoyed fried green tomatoes.....she told me this morning....said Jessica Tandy & Kathey Bates...had fried green toms...with fried human ribs.... ;D ;D
-
Only grow red tomatoes ?? And what color are they before they turn red ???
One of these days KC !! Have to go to my daughters today !!

well seeing as how...they only sell red tomatoes in the shops....they don,t do green ones....i,m going to have a hard job getting hold of them....mind you...nothing stopping me having fried red tomatoes...done to a green tom recipe....they,ll no doubt still taste the same.....might be even better seeing as how....the green ones are only half grown....or does it not work that way.....
-
BigWullie, When I was about 14 yrs.old and was at my friends house, and her mom made them with red tomatoes and they were great! Every now and then I'll make them, since they are fried. Just buy tomatoes that aren't so ripe.

HA, ;D ;D long time ago I paid $25 to set up at an inside fleamarket in the local NG armory. .... lots n' lots of "lookers" but, literally, the only one selling anything was the man with his "fresh-ground" cornmeal.
KC, maybe this would serve your purpose.

no they won't, ....... no more than would a slice of "green" (non-ripe) tomato taste the same on a BLT or a hamburger.
-
Agree with cogar, they don't taste the same! They red ones also fall apart easily! But they do still taste good!
I do like the mill idea! Thanks cogar!
-
well,i,m never likely to find out...as they don,t sell green toms.....and i,m not about to try and grow them..just so i can have what is effectively an un-ripe tomato...
-
.and i,m not about to try and grow them
;D They will grow by themself.
Put one (1) or 2 tomato plants right beside of your house, preferably in a flower bed, on the East or Southeast side. Drive a stake beside of them and then put strong cord from the stake to the eve of your house. And as the tomato plant grows ... keep it loosly tied to the cord with a 1/2" strip of cloth or a piece of the same cord.
And that one (1) plant should provide you all the tomatoes you will eat until cold Fall temperatures kill it.
As long as you continue to "tie-it-up" .... it will continue "growing upwards".

bigwull==do you get weather of 80's at all??
our temp..is measured in celsius...as opposed to your fahrenheit...our average summer temp, is 18deg celsius..or 64.4 fahrenheit...which for us is good....its not too hot, and you can enjoy the warmth, and still be able to function....as opposed to lying in the shade all day.. i can,t be doing with those high temps....where you have to sit with yer arse in a bath of cold water...Nah...give me every summer with a guaranteed 64.4....and i,d be as happy as this guy..... ;D
