Title: Need some research help on silver mark !!
Post by: mart on November 01, 2013, 09:28:12 am
This is from another forum so have no pic !! Its a silver over copper or more likely brass from the look and marked AKU or possibly AKV 10/1000 !! Nothing unusual just plain block letters !! But can`t find anything similar and no other marks or if there were they are completely worn off !! Nice little low, floral, footed design, chaste bowl !! My opinion is possibly Dutch for import silverplate A- Amsterdam, K-1920, V- Duty mark !!  Nothing matches with AKU so I am going with AKV !!  Any ideas of where this is from ??

HKU, from what I can find, does come up as being a hallmark on German Silverplate 20th Century BUT the initials are intertwined...not like this.

Several pieces sold at Christie, German origin, HKU intertwined...no pics...and were sold to someone in Amsterdam.

Can't find a AKU.

Germany has a HKJ that isn't identified but it is different from this as well....

So many makers out there never got cataloged.

The 10/1000 i think refers to the thickness of the silver plate. Like microns in gold plate.

Very, very thin and hence why the dish is rubbed in several places. Tomsantiques seems to think it's pure silver but it's clearly rubbed through, showing the base metal beneath. The numbers / digits are modern but the style is old, something you see fairly regularly on Cantonese or Hong Kong made items

HKU looks alot like Hong Kong University!  LOL

believe this is 10/1000 is a numbering system not for metal content.

Also appears thin silverplating with base metal showing through...but the pics are hard to tell.  They should have pics taken without a flash!

Only thing I found was those letters and 10/1000 were used by the Dutch,, but no where did it give how they were used or in what form !! Could be German,, could be anything !!
Yes I agree with the thin plate and think this was just a pretty little bowl meant for export so was only marked with whatever was necessary for that !!
It doesn`t seem to be a well informed group on some things and a couple of them just try to get one up on the other !!
Tomsantiques thought it had a gold wash but the wear pattern isn`t right !!  It just an inexpensive plated piece !!

Thanks all !!

Those letters aren't hallmarks, Mart. And the Dutch export / import letters are fancy calligraphy, not a modern font

Looks like this

I looked at the list of date/town letters ect and some were simply block letters they said that all items intended for export had a V mark and A was used to indicate Amsterdam !! That's how I came to that conclusion,,of course I could be all wrong !! Let me see if I can find the link I used !!

Each would be incuse though. How they appear on that dish / bowl is more in keeping with an acronym
