Title: Oak tall boy from 1920s?
Post by: waitb on December 03, 2013, 11:55:24 pm
We have a tall boy dresser from the 1920s or perhaps earlier. It belonged to my grandfather.  We had it restored but are not using it anymore. What might be a reasonable asking price for it?  It is rustic and I think made of oak.

It is indeed oak....but those knobs...aargh,....they drag it down....on this side of the pond...i,d be buying that for firewood,.....change those knobs, and you might get £40/£50+.....leave it as is....you,ll be lucky to see £20

Oak it is. In the midwestern U.S. you might get $150 or so, depending on where you are.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses.  I agree about the knobs. I was really disappointed when the restorer put those ugly knobs on. The original, btw did have glass knobs, but they were smaller and fluted and clearly from the era.

I would have asked for them back! You know they sell older knobs/pieces for people who want to restore to original!!!

You know, I did ask for them back, and the guy said he threw them out.  I seriously doubt it because they were in great condition.  I suspect he sold them to someone else.  Live and learn...

Hey there R&RR !!  How are things out your way ??

Busy. Layoffs at work (I haven't been hit yet). So between working eighty hours a week, job hunting, and training for a new career, I like to take a few minutes and see what's happening in the world of cool old stuff. How goes it your way?

This is my home the past few days.  We had a major ice storm here in TEXAS!!!!!  It has been staying 26 at night and 34 day.  People this isn't snow...it is sleet piled up!!!!

In fact it caused a real problem at our home yesterday.  I kept smelling gas in the kitchen and we have an all electric kitchen!  I was getting ready to cook dinner and realized the gas was coming IN our stove vent that is supposed to take air OUT!!! (the stove is on an island in the middle of the kitchen so the vent goes under the house and out at ground level). The ice drifts against the house were over 3' and had covered over the gas meter and vent opening.  The cold made the piping move slightly and gas was escaping...and the only place to escape (being covered in ice) was through the vent pipe into our home.  So the hubs carefully (note the word carefully) chipped the ice away so the gas goes outside.  Gas Co. can't come out til next week because so many homes are without heat and bigger leaks than ours!!!

Our culdesac is the most popular around for the kids...sliding down the street and our yard is the steepest (remember you are in Texas) on trash can lids since the street is solid ice!!

Ha !! Everyone had flattened trash can lids when I was a kid !!  That handle slowed you down so we "fixed" it !!  Not many use the old style metal trash cans anymore !!  Cardboard boxes work well too !!

OK, who remembers loading up the neighborhood kids on an old upside down car hood and getting pulled around town behind some willing and foolish driver? 8)

On the rare occasions we got enough snow to do that,, I don`t remember anyone having a car !!  If it snowed once every 2 or 3 years we were lucky and usually it was just a sprinkle that piled up around the fencelines !! About once every 10 years we get an ice storm !!  Last one I was iced in and without power in an all electric house 4 days !!  It got a little cool !!
