Title: Dugan Amethyst Beaded Basket
Post by: Dogaman on January 11, 2014, 04:19:38 pm
Greetings,

Bought this today, but the poor thing has seen better days. I found information about it, but those few others on the internet have edges that are turned down; this one's isn't.  The last pic shows the interior. Is that just dirt around the edges? Or has the iridescence been scrubbed off? It got a gentle cleaning when we got home, but this "Ring around the collar" still remains.

I need some suggestion on how to figure out if it is dirt and, if so, suggestions on how to safely clean it off without damaging the interior.

Thanks!

give it a bath with soda crystals....thats bicarbonate of soda....or you could use malt vinegar....it works wonders....

I know I can use denture tables for ceramic vases that have 'gunk' in the bottom. I might try that or baking powder and a soft tooth brush.

Some that was made in the 60`s is a sprayed on finish, not baked on or made in the glass !!  It will scrub off if a abrasive is used !!  Some just flaked off with age !! Most were repro`s of earlier patterns !!

Mart,

I can't find anything about this mold having been reproduced. Do you think it might be a reproduction?

Don`t know without seeing it,,and hard to tell from pics !! Can`t remember ever seeing that pattern but not all are repros,, its just the way it was colored when made !! Can be quite original but still have that finish !!  Do you have the denture tablets for clear glass ?? Of so try wetting a Q-tip and scrub it on the tablet, then on the glass see if that will remove the film,if that is what it is !! I can`t really see the area you are talking about well to tell if its dirty glass or the finish is coming off !!

When I first saw this I thought it was a Northwood Bushel Basket variant. But, after scouring David Doty's site found it under Dugan/Diamond.  http://ddoty.com/beadedbasket.html and http://www.ddoty.com/beadbasketbigbskwv.html .  Also, found it at Carnival Heaven http://www.carnivalheaven.com/carnivalglass102/id77.htm  and http://www.carnivalheaven.com/carnivalglass104/id85.htm

We had a cold front coming through when we got home, so the pics were taken indoors and with a flash--I know, bad me! LOL I will try to take better pic of the ring tomorrow in natural light. Thanks for the hints!

I had a bunch of a carnival type glass that was my mothers !! After a lot of years it kind of looked like a patchwork quilt where the color came off !! It was rarely used and I know it was never scrubbed with anything abrasive !! Not sure why some does that !! Hope yours is just a film that comes off easily !!

Thanks, Mart. Me, too!

Good thing is, paid $17. Bad thing is, if this IS a rare piece then I need to keep as much of the original finish as possible! Sigh...

As promised, here are new pics.

Mart,

Tried the q tip and denture cleaner...no go. the 'discoloration' came back. It must be the iridation.

Hubby has a theory that one owner might have used it for a small potted plant holder. That would make sense, as the 'ring' is mostly around the lip of the basket where the plastic pot would not have touched.

Oh well, I will keep as is, as it seems to be a rare bird!

hubby,s theory is probably the right one...try the malt vinegar on it....i had a cup ring mark on  a teak table top..and the malt vinegar removed it....

Wull,

Would apple cider vinegar work just as well?

Acid is acid,, try the cider vinegar but on a Q-tip !! If it cleans a small spot then do the rest !! Also might try plain white toothpaste on a soft cloth & see if that will remove it !! It looks like a typical example of "dirty glass" to me !!

Nothing helped. Baking soda and vinegar...nope. Tooth paste...nope.

Here are more pics. What I think is that the blue and green highlights are still on the inside, but the gold has been worn or eroded off (probably, as hubby says, from having a plastic plant pot in there) except for the rim, which didn't touch the pot. Therefore, it now looks dingy.

The gold will wear off !! I thought you were talking about the discoloration on the inside !!

That last pic shows it perfectly...the "ring around the collar" on the inside, below the line of the lip of the basket.

I am going to leave as is.  I love it, anyway!

Looks like someone kept a plant in it and watered.. I don't want to be the doom and gloom queen, but I don't think it will come off. Bottle people would use oil to bring back shine to it. If you rub the inside it will dissappear.

G-acres,

That was hubby's theory--the plant. What kind of oil will help rejuvenate it?

light machine oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil, take yer pick...any of them will do,....just steer clear of used engine oil.....its full of fine metal particles.... ;D

True, just a rag with a slight amount of oil and rub over it (buff it) should help alot.  I also do this with my sinks and shower!  Makes soap and mineral buildup almost nil!

Clever KC. I'll have to try that with the shower. Dogaman they pretty much covered the bases with oil.

Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions. Since it appears, from my online research, that this MIGHT be a rarer piece, I'll just oil the inside every other day and see how it looks in a week or so.

Again, Thanks!!!!

Greetings,

Thought I would post some new pics of the Dugan after 2 days of virgin olive oil treatment.  I lightly oiled it and let it set for two days on top of the china cabinet so it could get air circulation. Then I re-oiled it today.

The first pic is what I originally posted. The second and third were taken tonight in front of puter but with the flash, as was the first.

It looks like it was just dried out. The discoloration has totally disappeared and it now glistens! Thanks all!

I was browsing around on David Doty's site and found this:

So, this is a KEEPER! Not bad for $17.00!

Thanks, again, everyone for your help!
