Title: Majolica Squirrel dish, George Jones??
Post by: myracles103 on May 12, 2014, 10:41:35 am
I am interested in some more information on this dish. I am assuming it is a reproduction. Is there any value in it?

Any help is much appreciated

Yes. It's a fairly good reproduction. Probably worth about £30-50 ( less than a tenth of the original but good enough quality if that sort of money is outside a collector's price range )

The registration mark you've taken a photo of should include numbers / letters.

I agree 100%.  When repro majolica first started coming out, I got stung at an auction.  I should have known better & I guess somewhere in the back of my mind, I did.  Although I had good company, 2 other dealers were bidding on it & they were members of the Antiques Dealers Association of Canada.  GG

Oh dear  :(

The detail on this is good but the colours are slightly wrong and the mark is just plain wrong. Base rim is also clearly not right.

Would look fine on a shelf though !

Well I paid $1.50 for it in a thrift store.  ;D I just looked on ebay and saw a replica that had sold for $200, and others listed for $200+

The person who paid $200 for that repro squirrel dish may have believed it was genuine. Very naughty description saying it was antique. Blatantly not.

The piece I bought was marked with a spurious Minton mark & at the time none of us had any idea that majolica was being reproduced.  I ended up selling it to another dealer as a repro, I lost a fair amount of $, but it's a lesson I have never forgotten.
I don't think at $1.50 you can really lose!  ;D   But those ones on Ebay that are calling it antique is just plain wrong.  GG

Jealousy will get you "smitten" .... thus, in your case,  I would consider it a "mark of expertise". ;) ;)

One of them may have been in error - both KC and i received one after making comments in the prayer wheel thread.

I'd expect someone who doesn't agree with an opinion to explain why, not simply hide behind a smite. It is a discussion forum, after all.
I suspect certain poster(s) but i guess i'll leave them to it.

Oh that's not fair.  I agree, if you don't like the answer at least stand up for your belief & put your name on it.  I've had stuff like this happen on other forums, which is why I changed my identity....Sorry this is happening.  GG
