Title: Mourning brooch, please help
Post by: little_holme on May 12, 2014, 02:30:47 pm
Hi guys, so I've never done anything like this before but recently a little brooch caught my eye at a car boot sale. I bought it because it was cute but on returning home my husband pointed out it had hair incased in it, so I did a bit if research and found it to be a mourning brooch. I now have questions of what is a mourning brooch and is it worth anything? I thought this might be a good place to start! Thank you for your time x

Mourning brooches are worth big $$$$!  Go on Ebay and type it in.

Yes icegold is right. You can tell the age of the brooch by the "C" clasp. The cost also depends on the metals and if there are stones. I still think you could get $$$.

I agree that mourning brooches and necklaces are of high value.

Just something about this one...  The back side/clasp/design all look late 1800's up to early 1900's in style.  Just the "God Is Love" doesn't look as old as the rest of the piece.  The style/Font is different, coloring, etc.  It looks more modern.

Hi, thank you for your replies. The outer gold looks like its boarding on a rose gold whereas the middle god is love bit is very bright gold? I'm going to pop to the jewellers today and see if they can shed any light on it? X

Hi, so I had it tested and the jeweller said it was rolled gold? But could be of some value to a collector because of the 'god is love' bit! X

I agree, it's lovely and the mourning jewelry is very hot with collectors. You should get well over the gold value for it.

Taleofthesevenseas, I have no idea how to even go about selling it? Would you recommend eBay or an auction? I tend to sell clothes so this is really not something I'm familiar with! X

Go to ebay and look around at some of the listings !! Check and see what the completed sales have done !!  Remember when you do, that asking price and selling price are not always the same !!
