Title: John Martin (Adelaide) Furniture
Post by: nld on May 23, 2014, 07:09:43 pm
Hi,
New on here and hoping someone can help.
I have a timber table and chairs with brass plaques on the chairs with J. Martin and Co Limited THE BIG STORE.
I'd like to know whether they would be worth anything before I sell.  I have no idea how old or whether they are even antique.
Has anyone any information on these?
Thanks in advance

The chairs are typical kitchen "cottage" chairs that were painted a while ago. They are from around 1900 of a bit earlier. The paint is actually a plus as are the seats that are intact. I like them at around 100.00
The drop leaf table dates from around the same time from what I can tell without close examination. I don't think the stretcher shelf is original but it could be. I would say around 75.00 for that one.

I think the table is a bit later than the chairs !! I have seen many of these that were typically used when kitchens were smaller !! Could be used as it is in the pic for a work surface or leaves up for a dining table !! Have seen them both with the lower shelf and without !! The ones with the lower shelf usually sell for a bit more than the others,,about $125. here in Texas !!

Do check on your locality !! Could be more or less depending on where you are !!

I'm assuming that you are located in Australia. In doing some reading about the early department stores down there, I see where some operated their own furniture factories. I don't know if "Johnnies" (John Martin) did so, but I would think that the value might be slightly more if the pieces were domestic as compared to imported.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I'm in Australia so will have to try to find someone who can tell me a little more.
Cheers for that
