Title: Brass Fireplace Tool
Post by: Vwdoyle on June 04, 2014, 08:46:19 pm
I picked this up at Goodwill along with the complete set of fireplace tools and stand.  I can not for the life of me figure out what this is.  I have asked several people and they are all just as stumped as I am.  Is this even an antique? Usually when this happens it is the simplest explanation.

It is the same length as the other tools in the set (30").  I think the pictures can describe it better than I can.
Let me know what you guys come up with.

Thank you!

Compare with this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Antique-Crescent-Lite-Brass-Gas-Lamp-Lighter-Pole-Makers-Mark-/261393876583?pt=Antiques_Decorative_Arts&hash=item3cdc4a0667 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Antique-Crescent-Lite-Brass-Gas-Lamp-Lighter-Pole-Makers-Mark-/261393876583?pt=Antiques_Decorative_Arts&hash=item3cdc4a0667)

If you search "Crescent Lite Firelighter", you should be able to come up with some more information.

That is definitely it.  It has the same makers mark which I overlooked.  I think I did ok spending $10 for the set.

Thanks Rauville!

What someone on eBay thinks their item is valued at and actual market value is vastly different usually.

Here's a similar one that did sell at auction.

Interesting to note in the auction house description they say that it dates to the early 20th Century when the patent number relates to 1948. Creative advertising at work! Regardless, it's a neat collectible.
