Hi,
My son and I were in a small country antique store and came across an old Remington Rand typewriter (#17 I believe). It is made in Canada so my understanding is the serial number should start with a JC (looked all over) but could not find it. I did find other #s, specifically on the chassis (40124) and beside the right ribbon spool (2Z803) but I don't believe these are the serial numbers. I was also wondering why the keyboard has no 1 key though there are several fraction keys. I've included some pics to help provide some reference.
Except for a few sticky keys, which should be resolved with a light cleaning, the overall condition seems to be pretty good. The ribbon still even has some ink. My son is looking forward too having his 'new computer' in his room to show all his friends.
Thanks!

Manufacturing cost savings. ;D ;D
The alpha capital "I" is used for the numeric "1".

Thanks for the reference Cogar!
I found the serial # on the right side under the roller bar. I had to extend all the way to the left and was just able to spy it. Turns out it started with a J (J930778) which, according to the Typewriter Database, indicates it was made in July 1946. It also looks like the JC prefix was only used briefly, so the C doesn't necessarily indicate it was made in Canada, as the label on this clearly indicates Made in Canada.

I remember learning on typewriters that didn't have the number 1!
Things do change. I now understand that Canada and places in the USA are starting to take cursive writing out of the curriculum and just going to printing! :O

Kids now can`t sign their name in any way that looks like English !!

That must be just another “agenda” being pushed by the lefty liberal socialist to force “social control” upon the populace …… and being unknowingly aided and supported by the Teacher’s Unions, Credit Card companies, Banking industry, flim-flammers, scammers, forgers and identity theft’ers because of their “vested interests”.
Firstly, Teachers will support it because of less work and responsibility for them.
Secondly, the results of the above will dictate that one’s personal “signature” will no longer be a means of “identification” and flim-flamming, scamming, forgery and identity theft will run rampant.
Thirdly, the results of the above will dictate that the Banking industry would no longer honor “personal signature” checks from any person or company and thus demand “photo ID” Debit/Credit cards and/or electronic transfer of all fund$.
Fourthly, the results of ALL the above will dictate that the Credit Card companies will gain an exponential increase in business.
And last but not least, the Federal Government will no longer have a need to print or coin “money” and will then be able to “track” …… every “electronic” dollar that changes hands.
The “agenda” pushing by the lefty liberal socialist to force “social control” took a great leap forward by the enacting of “The Great Society Program”, followed by the “Anti-Smoking-Tobacco Program”, then the “Junk Science of Anthropogenic Global Warming Climate Change” and now. the most recent, "Common Core Education Standards” including the non-teaching of “cursive writing” skills. :D :D

Wow....never thought of it that way. Was miffed that they are trying to omit it...but never paused to consider the repercussions! :O

Ever think about what would happen if the computer systems went down long term ??

Ever think about what would happen if the computer systems went down long term ??
Everyone would have to learn to use a typewriter... ;D
My wife and I tried to teach my kids cursive writing but they had no interest/desire since it was not required in school.

We also might learn to talk again, and actually have a conversation.

Now that's a thought !!
Andy,, I would be in trouble with the typewriter !! Couldn`t get my hands to work independently of each other !! Even took another class after I got out of school !! Couldn`t do it !! Of all the things I can do,,,typing ain`t one of them !! But I admire those that can !!
