Title: ceramic bowl
Post by: nobodyspecial on August 12, 2014, 05:08:49 PM
My grandmother has a ceramic bowl and has always wondered how old it is, where it was made, really any information about it. I took it to an antique store today and the woman there said it appears to made in England and is likely 90-100 years old, based on the patterns. She said during that time, in England, they were imitating oriental designs and that was how she guessed its age. There is a little Scotsman sitting on a globe on the bottom side and a small, gold coloured "A" but it's difficult to see what's written on the globe, which would be the real clue unfortunately. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may say in that globe, anyone familiar with that logo? Due to the cracks, I know it's not worth much, but my grandmother is very curious about its origins. Any information would be much appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Does the mark say Fenton in the middle? There is a company from Fenton England. 1914-1941.

Hi There...
This is a "Fenton" plate.
The pattern is "OSAKA" - this is the word above the crown. The colour is "Flow Blue".
The words inside the globe read:
JKL
FENTON
ENGLAND
The Maker was JL Kent
"Fenton" was the area in Staffordshire where it was produced
So your plate is a Flow Blue J.K.L. Fenton Osaka China, Early 1900's.
The gilding is still present on your plate, but well worn.
Here are some pics of a well preserved Fenton "Osaka" set, together with the base mark.

Thank you, Jedo! I was just about to post this on Ebay's porcelain group page, but I don't think I could ask for any more info than what you posted! Great information, cheers! And thank you, greenacres, for the Fenton tip
