Title: Can anyone tell me about a spoon by J.G pearson&co?
Post by: jerryk on March 19, 2015, 11:38:01 am
I found this spoon and thought it was kinda interesting, I seen similar spoons online with the the last name pearson but different first initials such as m.t. pearson. I would love to date this spoon , any help would be great.

I was only able to find one link to something that doesn't have any images but I am assuming it is similar.

Me either.  There was a I Pearson in Georgia in 1700's but this isn't the same.  This looks like the style of handle famous in mid to late 1800's.

A little history here

After seeing the end of your spoon ( right side ) I think I also have one like that.
I have a box of odds n ends of silver stuff. Didn't do any research on the stuff I have so I can't help you out there.
I'll take a look later this weekend if I remember and see if I can find it. Maybe the one I have has extra marks etc that might help date it.

Okay....your spoon maker is/was John Gann Pearson / J.G. Pearson & Co.
Newburyport, MA  1849-c. 1880!

Just a note: that pattern handle has popular for a very, very long time and is still being reproduced by makers today.  A classic pattern.  Every maker has their own name/pattern number for it.

You're mighty welcome!  Wish I could help more than that.  But at least the maker is identified.  Not many pieces out there for sale or with recent sales history.  :)
