Looks to have quite a bit of age and the bands that were added make it very interesting !! I looked for the mark but all did not load !! The one I was most interested in,, the Empress Cixi I could not see and it was mentioned that the blue and white was popular then !!  Does anyone recognize this mark to give an approx. date !! For all I know it may just say "Made in China" !!  Help !!

Hi mart, for the marks see here ( the Guangxu reign mark is the square one) : http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31907
As the decoration on the item looks like it is printed, not hand painted, it should not be from the Guangxu reign ( 1875-1908), as the Chinese started to use printed decoration later in the 20th century. Generally the item looks rather recent to me...

Looking at it again, I am not 100 % sure that the decoration is printed, the photos are too small. However the overall appearance does not look like Guangxu reign, it is much later for sure.

That's odd,, I can see the pics well !!  Did you go back to the first post??  The pics added in the middle of the thread were tiny but the first ones were fine !! I asked for larger pics of the marks and she resized them wrong !! What are those bands added for,,just decoration ?? I thought it strange that they were added over the top !!  Look at the start of the thread for larger pics !!

I think the silver bands are purely decorative, and added to give more "value" to the object. I have seen quite a few of these objects, it was always badly decorated porcelain and the bands often cover part of the decoration. I think the makers did not care much about it, it just had to look "exotic" to sell better... The pictures do not enlarge when I click at them, in fact the enlarged version is smaller than the pics in the post itself. But there are some areas where I believe to see that it was printed, as for example in the first picture at some of the leaves, where the transfer print seems not applied very well...

So this is one of the later items made "in the style of" ??  Would you say early 20th century ??

No, it is not copying something older, it is just a new creation using an old mark, I would think from the later 20th century...

Hi. My name is Norma and I actually own these box things.  I am also a dreadful newby at photographing with this camera and apologize for the quality of what I posted.  I will try to do it again, only better this time.  There are three of these, which made me suspicious, and they appear to be old. Two Butterfly shaped ones and a fan. There is crazing and and pitting on all three.  I love pottery, and have never seen this on new stuff.  I will take some new pictures now and post them. thanks for your info. I will try not to ask too many questions.

http://s39.photobucket.com/user/LadyZazu/library/forum%20pics?sort=3&page=1  here is the album I created.  Being a complete newby, I am not sure if it's okay to post all 50 pictures of these, so please if you will, go there and see the pics.  thanks.  Let me explain why this is important. I am not a collector.  I was married to a collector and my foster mother and her mother were avid collectors. They are all gone now.  I inherited too much of their stuff.  I want to sell it to raise money for my passion--homeless veterans.  My beloved Hunky shares this passion, so we are on a mission. So far, we have built one cabin this year and have the groundwork finished for 5 more on a hill we own.  Rather than donate this stuff to charity, I am trying to sell it.  Thank you for your help.  I realize that none of this will pay for a whole cabin, but even if it affords a man or woman a new set of pots and pans or decent NEW bedding, it is worth it.  Pics of the first cabin and the view from the front porch can be seen in my Photobucket album named Cabin 1.  Our focus is for veterans who have returned with PTSD, etc. Our waiting list is growing and cabin 2 work begins in ten days.  Because of MarthaHill's work on the Kovel's site, I was able to sell some stuff and contribute to a new refrigerator and stove for our first occupant.  He expects to live here for the rest of his life.  Thank you for your efforts.

Glad you decided to join us !! Hopefully Mat will take another look to confirm !!  The crazing & staining is actually not important to age but rather improper storage !!
Others will likely weigh in on this,,hopefully !!  I personally trust the opinions of the members here !!  Many deal with these things regularly and know much more than I do !!

The photos are much better, thanks! I think the decoration could be made by hand, but it is still not an old item, the style is not right. Crackle glaze can be easily produced in the firing process. Look here at some newly made items with similar silver bands, and see the similar style of the underglaze blue painting on the inside: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/China-Chinese-Silver-Porcelain-Dragon-Phoenix-Palace-Belle-Girl-Box-Ashtray-Bowl/32322167516.html?spm=2114.40010708.4.7.rHScw3 .
I wish you the best for your veteran project!

Thank you Mat.  I took the metal part off of one of them.  Here's what is under the bottom plate. I like it better without the metal on it.  It is definitely a stamp, as you can see the imprint on the underside.  The little box will go into the contribution box and the metal scraps into the semi-precious metal bin. I am not in the habit of destroying antiques and Hunky DID have a bit of shock to get over there, hehehehe.

That is a mark of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795) in seal script, but it is not of the period. Reign marks are commonly used in later periods, too.

Yeah, it's quite far removed from being an antique  ;D

thank you so much.  I have to agree.  You can see where the crackle slip was applied haphazardly and the underlying pottery is snow white and not at all affected by age.  I bought these on eBay years ago for less than $10, so if I get half that in metal scrap, I will be very happy.  Thanks again all of you.  Hunky will rest a little easier now, knowing he isn't harboring a violent human who destroys history on a whim,  ;D

Oh Don`t do that !!  Why not go ahead and sell them on ebay ??  They do not have to be old for someone to want them !! I still think they are quite interesting and would look great as simply decorator items !! Many people like the antique look but can`t afford the antique prices some people ask !!

I will shop the other two around locally and see if anyone is interested.  One is already free of its confinements, and actually is much prettier, I think.  I do thank you for all you have done and for introducing me to another great forum.  I do believe this was the last of the unknown stuff.  I can figure out what most of the rest is, and can find copies of it online.  thanks again for all you do!

Just getting in on this one.

So sorry it isn't that old and is made to look older!

Still hope you really like them - that is the important part of purchasing items!

I do agree that if you liked them well enough to purchase them, someone else will like/enjoy them just as much!  Just takes the right person/s!
