These peg lamps rest on "beehive" push-up brass candlesticks that are similar, except that one seems to be the next size up from the other. I think the fonts are milk glass, and the burner wheel has a six-pointed star (sorry about the blurry photo, but if you magnify the 3rd photo you can still see it). I was told by a collector that the short chimneys are original. They certainly seem heavier than what you would find new.
Any ideas on manufacturer? How about value?
I'm going to guess that they are U.S. made, ca. 1860-1880. $400 for the set?
-
Since things are a bit slow around here, I thought I'd share a little follow-up information about these.
The burners were made by A. and P. Gaudard in France in the 20th century, which (believe it or not) is still in business after some 300 years! Evidently the burners are 20th century, and they've been retrofitted into the older 19th century milk glass fonts and beehive candlesticks.
So what does this do for value? I don't know. I have to think that, since the burners are not original, it would bring it down a bit. I'm thinking maybe $300 for the pair?
-
Hmmmm, not a clue on value but $150 each seems low to me, even with burners.
-
OK, I can go with that ;) :)
Maybe we're back to $400 for the set? $500? All of your input is most appreciated.
-
I don't really know lamp values but 250 seems more like it to me, 150 would be like what one pays for a china import at the hardware store

I think you are about right Ghopper !! Scroll down to see similar pair except with clear reservoir that sold for $266. They had original burners !!
-
Geeeeeezzzzz, that's cheaper than a china import lamp!
-
That doesn't seem right. I know the antique market is still in the dumper, but a pair of 100+ year old peg lamps cheaper than a new lamp from China? It's wrong I tells ya, wrong!
-
lol, it's wrong but, it is what it is! It's the same for furniture just about, one can buy solid walnut, oak, cherry antique furniture cheaper that sawdust furniture at IKEA.
-
IT IS SOOOOO WRONG!!! :(
I would stick with the higher pricing! They are worth it!
-
Speaking of lamps, this just flew across my twitter feed from MAD

Gorgeous. I'll take one of each. ::)
When I lived in New York I'd routinely do research at the New York Historical Society, and they had a whole room full of original Tiffany lamps, most worth $50-$150K each, and there were dozens of them! I used to walk through the room unaccompanied, marveling. There was no guard in the room itself, nothing to keep me from touching the lamps, or even knocking one over. And people say New Yorkers aren't trusting!

If it was a choice Tiffany or Handel,, I would take the Handel any day over Tiffany !! Did you notice that ring ?? Did it say Gold plat or gold plated ?? The band had a scuff on the bottom !! Good gold should not scratch !!
-
Did it say Gold plat or gold plated ??
I think it said gold plat, whatever that means. I am guessing the 20k price was for that 5 carat diamond, not the ring itself

Like I said, one of each would be fine. ;)

Mmmm,, Have you ever known a jeweler that would put a five carat diamond in a cheap plated mount ?? If I were the buyer I would have that stone checked in a hurry !!
Thats like putting a Timex band on a Rolex !! It just isn`t done !!
-
It just isn`t done !!
LOL, there she goessssssssssssss again. I post a story about lamps and Mart is focused on some ring, reaches for my smite stick! You could be right though, i don't even know why they would include a ring in a story about lamps. I never even noticed the ring til you said something! And the prices for some of those lamps? geeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzz zzzzz, i knew they were expensive but not THAT expensive.
-
Well,, I do not see those prices for something to light your way to the toilet !! But some people have more money than sense !!
-
Lol! Mart you are hilarious!!! Would love it if we lived close and could spend time together! I just love your sense of humor!
-
Well,, come on down to Texas !! Would be glad to have you join us !! Would be fun !!
-
Could gold plat mean gold+platinum? If so, that probably wasn't a cheap mount. SMITE!!!
-
A Google search for "gold plat" resulted with ............
Gold-plated jewelry is created using an electro-chemical process that places a layer of Gold on copper, brass, or some other base metal. The thickness of the Gold used in plating usually determines the price of the piece.
-
Thing is, in description of ring it says "This woman’s platinum and light yellow Cape diamond ring with a center stone of about 5.15 carats "
Another thing is, your google search added 2 letters, "ed" turning plat into plated, kind of a big difference there.
-
Could be gold and platinum but still shouldn`t scratch !!
-
Is that a scratch or makers mark?
-
"This woman’s platinum and light yellow Cape diamond ring with a center stone of about 5.15 carats "
Well "DUH", I really don't think that the abbreviated "gold plat" notation is in fact defining a "gold plated platinum ring" ...... simply because it would have been utterly silly for anyone to "plate" a solid gold ring with platinum @ todays price of $1,064.60/oz ...... or to "plate" a solid platinum ring with gold @ todays price of $1,327.95/oz.
But it gets even more sillier iffen that ring was made 10+ years ago, say in 2002 because those metal prices were quite different then.
The price of gold in 2002 was around $342.00/oz ........ whereas the price of platinum was around $500.00/oz.
Whether that ring was made yesterday or yesteryear, ..... it makes no sense to "plate" one of those metals with the other metal. ;D ;D ;D
-
I do not think it is plated at all, it is either a platinum ring or a gold AND platinum ring. There is no plated involved at all.
-
Is that a scratch or makers mark?
Well,, its on the bottom of the band and along the edge !! Sure looks like a scratch !!
-
lol, reaches for my SMITE stick again, WACK WACK WACK. Mart leading poor old dad down the garden path again!
-
And, THAT'S the GOOD NEWS! The bad news is, i keep following her down the path!
