Title: A Chinese Cloisonné Bottle Vase
Post by: jacon4 on June 02, 2017, 12:55:53 pm
It had an estimated value of $400-$600, hammered down for $812,500.00

I would say there is a VERY happy consignor on this little item!

Crazy. Evidently the family didn't know what they had, but what's the excuse for the auctioneers? $400-$600 expected and over $800K realized?

Wrong auction house obviously, Quinn is a small "country" type firm out in northern virginia, burbs of DC plus it was online at igavel.com. Goes to show though, if selling an object, it's very important who you choose to sell/market it. That can vary from your local craigslist to Christie's in NYC and everything in between but it's well worth ones time to consider carefully where you sell your stuff.

No kidding. Good thing for the owner and the auction house that some of the bidders knew their stuff.

It kind of reminds me of the Leonardo da Vinci portrait that was unearthed a few years ago. Evidently it was briefly on a gallery wall for something like $25K, and now that its been authenticated it's said to be worth upwards of $100 million. I only wish I would have been passing through that gallery in that brief window of time; I like to think I would have recognized that "Leonardo touch.: I would have sold Mart into slavery to buy that painting! :)

You'd think that gallery would still be kicking themselves for that!

Yes, i would bet it was identified online from igavel.com by 2 or more bidders who knew what it was, it's clear Quinn & owner had no clue. The internet has brought A LOT more scrutiny to the antiques world.

Easy now, BEHAVE! or i'll put you and the other old woman on your stools! Where women & children sat for thousands of years! It wasn't until the 18th century that women (except Queens & Royals) were provided chairs to sit in!

Yes, teaching women to sit down on their own stools is a seldom-explored piece of history.  ;)

T’weren’t it the Amish and/or Shaker households that chairs were only provided when it was time to sit down at the table to eat, …… otherwise the chairs hung on “chair pegs” on the wall.

Yup, shure t’was the Shakers, to wit:

The Shakers began the tradition of wall mounted furniture by placing pegs along the walls of their rooms in order to hang chairs and other furniture pieces when they are not in use.

Yes, the Shakers did that but, it was in the 19th century.

That's right! just ignore Paglia's argument! That's what old people do! She is an art history prof in Philly, an absolutely brilliant writer, you should try reading some of her stuff, agree or not, this lady is very SHARP! She travels the world offering commentary on the topics of the day.
