Title: Bookend Value?
Post by: ghopper1924 on August 24, 2017, 02:09:16 pm
Hey all:

I posted this on the "other" site, and I hate to leave my old Antique-Shop.com friends out! ;D

I'm curious about how a ding will affect value. These Rookwood bookends are called, I believe, 'The Reader.' One is flawless, the other (on the right) has a tiny repair on a knuckle. The picture is foreshortened; the ding is barely larger than a pinhead.

So my question: How does this affect value? -10%? -20%? More? Less?

Thanks!!

uhhhh...believe the ding is almost a full finger and not a pin head!  :)

Don't know if you ever saw this expired listing but it was for a unique glaze.

and now relisted

I do believe for a collectible piece it will make a difference in pricing...but how much...all about the market and who wants one like their parents had.

Looks like a $200 ding to me. :o

Thanks, those are the kind of answers I was looking for.

I actually think that it's more than a $200 ding, and that the E-Bay listing was "optimistic."  A pair in excellent condition should sell for around $700-$800. I would hope that replacement on my pair would be $400, which would be fine, because I paid less than that. It's all good.

Thanks for your input!

I agree with Ghopper,, the one on ebay was overpriced even for the unique glaze !!  If the bookends are as rare as they say (I haven`t checked) then the ding will be less important than if they were common works !! I think 20% of market value would be  a fair estimate !!
