The White House has some of the best examples of furniture in the nation, not only American but European furniture as well, it's really a Museum. It wasn't always that way............
"Jacqueline Kennedy arrived and was appalled to discover the White House was furnished with reproductions from a New York department store, McLaurin said. She created the historical association, the advisory committee and a curator to help the White House collect and exhibit only the best, McLaurin said."

Great topic! Thankful for Jackie O and Melania; they worked hard on ennobling the heritage of the White House!
Then there's Hillary, throwing antiques against the wall and shattering them. :(
Um....anyway, the Lincoln bed is my favorite piece. Just....wow!
-
I can't find anything to support the claim that Hillary smashed antiques. Can you support that with some solid information? I'm glad to hear that Jackie Kennedy took the step of preserving the historic pieces in the White House and that Melania Trump is working with advisors to uphold the tradition.

It was from an interview with Gary J. Byrne talking about his 2016 book 'Crisis of Character' about the Clinton Whitehouse.
-
OK I looked it up, the allegation in the book is that Hillary threw an antique vase at Bill. (I probably would have done the same under the circumstances, LOL!). The book, however, contains disputed allegations and Byrne contradicted his own claims in the book when making sworn depositions. Apparently it is still quoted by far right sources despite this, but from what I can see, it is widely understood to be unreliable information. Not trying to get into a political discussion, but I hate to see anything unreliable reposted.
-
Me too.
The fact is that political opinion posts usually reflect the owner's perception bias and not "The Truth" that they believe they have a corner on.
We both have our perception biases.
Did Byrne contradict himself on this particular incident, or was it something else? Not quite sure what the "it" in question is. Is there any political book that is completely undisputed? I'd hate to dispute anything written by, for example, Hillary because of that thing about reposting unreliable information. So I don't.
So apparently by bringing this up I'm dismissed as "far right," which sounds kind of like a marginalizing, left-handed slur. Again, perception bias.
I do agree that a political discussion, although it might temporarily liven up the board, is not a good idea. The typical result is raised blood pressure while everyone's opinions hardens and nobody is convinced of anything.
Selah.

Oh dear. By "far right sources" I meant media sources, not friends :) So very sorry, I really did not mean to hurt your feelings! Please forgive me.
-
All good! I don't believe in being "butt hurt" and crying to the sky about politics; I'll leave that to others.
My hope is that the owner of a cool 1799 stone house in Tennessee and I would have plenty of common ground outside of the political world.
-
Absolutely! :) My husband and I have opposite political views too. We have a saying in our house if a conversation gets heated: "Keep the politics out in the garden with the rest of the fertilizer!"
-
Ha! I'm going to use that in the future. Too good! ;D
-
She threw a vase ?? No !! I would have found something heavier than that !! ;D
-
Dang! What's goin on over here! A bit of drama & as usual i missed it! didn't get any email notices! :(
This is what happens when someone injects politics into a thread, goes to hell in a hurry! We were DAMN LUCKY Jackie came along when she did, many priceless pieces of furniture (guesses other objects as well) had been lost due to foolish govt decisions.
She set up a process, complete with private funding to recover & restore many of these objects, Jackie's work continues to this day, it will never be "finished" and, that is a good thing.
-
People should take their "antiquing" as serious and emotional as they do their "political preferences". >:( >:( >:(

Tales and I were able to deal with the "tempest" by acting like adults of good will. I can think of some folks who could learn from that.
Nothing to see here....
