Because you wouldn't want to use an awake pig.

An awake pig, in an OR, probably wouldn't lie still while you were getting your lungs replaced.

Something has to be "breathing" for you ...... when you can't be doing it yourself.  ;D ;D

havent heard much about lungs but pig heart valves have been used for years !

I actually laughed out loud "dontbe" because it took Cogar's comment about sleeping pigs to get you to comment on here! 

They do come up with the darnedest things in medicine!
