Got a good price on this one. The top, however, is not original. The cut looks original, the depth, the shape.....all faithful. The color, though colored marble was not unknown ca. 1860, was probably white.
Do you think this lowers the value of the table? What would you, with your experience, think the table would sell for these days?

Hmmmm, yes if the top is not original that hurts value, no getting around that.
Has seen similar "brown" & "pinkish" marble on victorian tables before, are you sure it's not original? White-dominated for sure but there were colored marbles used.

True, but the marble is stamped "Made in Portugal" underneath. Definitely not 1860s.

Yes, absolutely lowers value, how much kind of depends, too many variables to list but, I would guess you could get 1/2 to 2/3 of what a similar form table in Chicago is selling for in 2 days. This one appears to have its original top and there are 30 watchers on LiveAuctioneers alone.

Quicky search on Past sales at LA has several that are comparable, selling in 800-1300 range with original tops so.......... 6000 past sales so it could take awhile to search thru this list, I only went a few pages deep.

JMO,, would not look good with a plain white marble top ! The larger size of this side table makes me think about an $800.to $1000.price range ! Could be more or less,, Victorian is just not that popular anymore ! But thats good for you Ghopper !!

Indeed, the thing is most antique furniture is sold to collectors and they can be quite picky, no one is more aware of that fact than dealers. I'd say about 1/2 my collection is from dealers and, I never let them forget the flaws in the piece I am dickering with them about! :)

Gotcha, but I'm not actually trying to sell it. Those dealers were just telling me what THEY would sell it for. I'm just trying to get a fix on value, keeping the replacement top in mind. :)

That mid-19th century rococo victorian rosewood table above? Sold for $425. in Chicago the other day, GEEZ, that is insanely cheap, cant buy the lumber for that. A bit depressing unless something was wrong with it.
