Post by: ifs on December 28, 2009, 08:57:13 pm
Can anyone help get some information on these?

Unless they have marks, it will be difficult to determine maker. Of all bookends made, the ship has to be more plentiful than any other. Seems that all makers made ships in many styles.

Yours are listed in McBride's book, 1997 as Galleon, Bronze, 4.25"x3.5", $30-$50, with no maker listed.

They will also be found in cast iron. Magnet will attract to cast. Many bookend molds were bought up by other companies and re-cast over the years.

Tim, were they designated as "antique" or vintage?

Neither, however most of the bookends we see of cast, bronze, etc. were vintage, 1920-30's, aside from reproductions, there are exceptions but most were pre WWII. I would consider these vintage, circa 1930.

These are made of iron. Any idea how much I should sell them for?

At a good live auction on a good day, they may bring $40-$50 for the pair. If your doing an on-line auction, I would start them at $9.99. As stated, ships are plentiful, many makers.
