Title: Can you ID this cabinet?
Post by: jmdubya on June 11, 2010, 07:27:43 pm
My brother parked this cabinet in my garage and I have no clue what it is or if it's worth anything. Can you help us out?

The pic is kind of shady to really see the detail or age but it looks like some type of secretary.  I see a nice tambour door with a towel rack? and nice etching on the glass or mirrors.  We have some experienced forum members that can do a lot better on price and description than I can so I hope they weigh in on this.

Welcome to the forum , JMW .

Is there any chance you could post a pic of the dovetail joints (at the front edge) of an open drawer ?

That is called a Side by Side Bookcase/Secretary.

I'm going to guess that is circa 1930's or 40's.

It does look a bit "newer" than the ones I have seen from the early 1900's. Just by the style of the hardware, the etching on the glass and the style of the wood. But clearer pics would help a bunch.

I thought secretary at first too........but then I realized it's a chiffarobe. You can tell because it has a mirror instead of glass, and it has dresser drawers, and a towel bar on the other side. A Secretary would have glass to display things, and would have fold down desk with smaller drawers on the other.

It doesn't look very old, unless it was restored a bit. The etched glass doesn't look very old, and it doesn't appear to be beveled.

But, without a better picture of the details, I can't say for sure the age.......

Hope that helps!

Beat me to it ThisNThat!  Nice job.

Would like to see a clearer pic and pics of dovetails, etc.

I debated on whether that was a mirror or a reflection of the glass. I figured a mirror would less likely have an etched design on it.

A later reproduction, of and earlier cabinet.with added extra's. look's to be of good quality. I would suggest $ 250.00 Dollars.
