Title: Need Help Identifying Couple Silver Pendants
Post by: Marc-Barr on June 30, 2010, 10:21:48 am
Going through some items and can not for the life of me identify these items. Any clues? Person I inherited these from was an antique collector/seller. Both are silver and open up. Both look to be pendants but other than that,I am totally lost. I don't see any signatures or markings on either. Many thanks!

Cool little items , Mark-Barr .

They appear to be 'icon lockets/pendants' to me .

The first image you posted seems like one from Thailand , IMO .

Unique nice pieces.

I would agree on the second being of Russian/Ukranian!

These days, so many wear religious symbols on clothing/jewelry, etc.  This was the precursor....

In many countries where there wasn't religious freedom...it was not uncommon to have items that would appear to be one thing....and have a hidden religious theme on it (yet not so "in your face" apparent that one could try and talk out of it if discovered)!

Would recommend a type/quality of metal origin....silver?  Silver content?  That makes a big difference in your value!

If I could make a suggestion about your pictures. Try taking photos with the flash turned off. Your getting lots of glare. Just make sure there is plenty of natural light and your photos might come out better. Just a thought.

I have seen similar Catholic pendants on Ebay. These have been listed as "pocket statues" and other names. I'm not Catholic, but my understanding is that these can give worshippers comfort in being able to take the icon of a special saint, Mary, Jesus or others with them.

Does the glass have a magnifying effect as well?

Am I seeing correctly that there is a ring to be connected to a chain?

No magnifying glass or anything, however the glass (or as I refer to it as a window) is pretty thick. Yes, it has a ring for wearing as a pendant or necklace.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the flash. My house has very poor light (I have tons of trees in front and back of yard) and on top of that my camera is pretty old. I've been putting off buying a new camera but I have to get one within the next couple of weeks. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone!
