Tips for camping near a lake during summer?
« on: June 03, 2025, 10:45:06 am »
Has anyone here done lake camping in the middle of summer? I’m planning a short weekend trip and I’m a bit nervous about the heat and bugs. I’ve only camped in the mountains before where it gets chilly at night. This will be my first time pitching a tent near water. Any must-haves I should pack or things to watch out for?

I camped near Lake Whitney once and it was actually better than I expected. It does get hot, but if you set up your tent in a shaded spot and bring a good fan or cooling towels, it’s totally manageable. Also, lake breezes help a lot. One spot you might want to look into is https://www.bluffcreekmarina.com/ — they’re right by the lake and have some good amenities nearby, which is a lifesaver if you need ice or extra supplies. Don’t forget bug spray though, especially in the evenings!

I’m more of a day-tripper than a camper, but I love how different the sky looks when you’re away from city lights. If nothing else, enjoy the stars. Worth it just for that view.
