Title: Help Identiying Desk Date and Origin
Post by: gharvey927 on November 21, 2011, 06:31:42 PM
Hi there,

I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me with info on this desk. I purchased it at a garage sale, and the seller told me it's a "1850's mission desk" that her parents received from a couple from California.

No builder or manufacturer identifiers anywhere.

Please let me know if any other pics will help. Thanks in advance.

Whitney

While often very well put together, mission style is pretty "plain jane" in appearance.  To me, this desk looks too ornate to be considered that.  That being said - it looks very interesting!  I think we may need more and better quality pics to determine much more though...

It appears to be more in a Spanish Revival style, which the seller may have been referring to.

Hard to tell...is that a bolt and square nut in the second photo?

Not Mission for sure !! Appears to be as Rauville said,, Spanish Revival or many call it Early California style !! I do not think it 1850 but can`t really tell without better pics !!  This was the style that was commonly used in the Spanish / Mediterranean style homes around 1900 and after !!
