My guess would be a COAL WOOD ASH SCUTTLE BUCKET similar to this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-HOLLAND-COPPER-COAL-WOOD-ASH-SCUTTLE-BUCKET-W-DELFT-HANDLES-LION-ACCENTS-/170740854568?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c0f2af28

wow thank you so much for your info :) the handle looks so much like mine ... there was a lady trying to get it before me but I took it first and she make me promise her not to use it as a flower pot lol.... is really interesting what you just told me thank you once again :)

In was thinking the same thing !! The 5 kan is probably the size however I have no idea what language !!
-

-
I found that it means house or hall in Japanese !! Didn`t check farther than that !!
-
oh thank you :)

I agree, it's for ash or for coal. There is one similar selling for $100 on my local Craigslist, but it has not sold for quite a long time, so I think they are asking too much. You can see it here:

That is a bit high !! This one looks like copper and it would sure be nice beside a fireplace !!
-

-

Have we have inspired another collector, Mar ?? Hope we have !! Kind of exciting isn`t it ??
-
oh yes :) thank you ::)

I'm thinking that your item was originally Dutch manufacture .
"KAN" , in that language , generally refs to - can , pitcher .
Just as we in the US have descriptions of 'standard. can sizes (such as #10) , they often baffle those from other climes .
Cool little coal/clinker unit , mar !
Thanks for posting it !
