It looks like a latch mechanism cut out of a door. Very cool that someone carved the date into it, that's very strange that it got left behind in a tote bag!

Interesting piece! I do believe you've found a 18th century Scandinavian "wooden block lock".

Now that door lock is a true "primitive".

I posted it yesterday, it has a 200 looks and about 12 watchers so far and bids thus far are a little over 20.00.  We have a running bet, we think it will go for around $40.00.  Here is the link for you to follow.

Oh man, I LOVE it! You know how I am with the 18th century stuff! I may just register and bid on it, I think it's gonna go for more than $40. I think closer to $85-$100.

I'm so torn! I really want this lock but there is also a lot of 18th century bullseye glass removed from the Martin Chittenden house that I REALLY want. I'm trying to decide between two awesome little pieces of history here and it's not fun! lol.

Wow would love to see this bullseyes Glass, personnally I would go for the glass, not to down play the lock.  Keep in mind though the lock you can pick up since you are close enough and save on shipping, and if you pick up on a day I'm at work I can show you our operation a bit.  But I always like glass better anyway.

Here are the glass panels, ironlord. It's just the panels of a window. If I win them, I'll have a window made for them. I'd put a little engraved brass plaque on the back of the window saying where the glass came from and when the new window was made. I hope they don't go for a fortune! I have been looking for an intact 18th century window with bullseye glass but I can't find one anywhere!
