Patent date of 1892 . I have my ideas of what it may have been for but dont know for sure .

My guess is that it was a Guard's or Night Watchman's per say "clock" to insure he was "making his rounds" in a timely fashion. The "keys" for it would have been firmly attached at different "stations" throughout the area to be monitored. ::) ::)

Guesses a bicycle wheel lock & chain.

I am trying to find it on Google patents but am not having any luck. Is the date October 25th, 1892?
-
I am with you Jacon4 !! Bicycle !! Through the wheel and around the frame !! Or around a light pole !!
-
We think its a bicycle lock . The chain could be cut pretty easy with a wirecutter though .
I am having a hard time finding a clock dial on it

Did they steal bicycles pre 1892? ;D ;D ;D ;D
I couldn't tell from the picture whether or not the lock mechanism released one end of the chain.
In 1892 that could have been offered "for sale" to lock up most anything.
Anyone have a re-print of a circa 1893, or later, Sear's catalogue?
-
I am sure it was the same back then with bicycles as it is with cars today !! If they don`t have one,,, they steal it !!

This thread is reminding me of a Judge magazine I have from 1892 with lots of bicycle advertising. I'll share some scans as soon as the laptop charges. :) It wouldn't have the lock in it because it is from mid-summer '92.

For some reason, my scanner does not like scanning the images in this magazine. It's a shame because there are some really beautiful pictures. It just looks terrible when it scans. :(
I have this magazine, the whole one.
