Title: Heres an easy whatsit for you.
Post by: frogpatch on March 03, 2012, 02:25:36 PM
I found this at an outdoor rummage sale by the local historical society. The basket measure 71/2 by 51/4 x 2. The whole thing is 24 inches long. I would guess by the green handle it is from the 30s - 50s. It is flimsy. My wife thought it was for roasting nuts but screening like that would burn up over direct heat for too long. I thought it could be an ash sifter but it seems too small and flimsy. It shows no sign of ever being in a fire. I am surprised that I do not know what it is but I am certain that one of you will nail this.

Corn popper for open fire or fireplace !!  It won`t burn up because you hold it over the heat and keep it moving !!

It would not hold very much popped corn. It is only 2 inches deep and 7 inches long and five inches wide. I am not disagreeing with you Mart but the one I had for the fireplace as a kid in the 50s was three times the size of this or more. This thing is not about as big as a box of brown sugar or elbow macaroni but thinner. Maybe its a popper for early weight watchers portion control.

Come on Frogpatch,, give the lady some credit for knowing her old stuff !!
For about 15 years hubby and I traveled in our motor home and spent a lot of time in Louisiana fishing !! Northern part not southern !! Had a friend from south La. that cooked stuff like that !! He was an excellent Cajun cook but for some reason I just could not get into boiled peanuts !! Gumbo, boudain  and all the rest I love  !! Don`t know why but they just did not float my boat !!

We love boudin and creole and and anything from there. I want to try the meat pies. I have a recipe but it is labor intensive.

Could it be for making toast over an open fire?

Still vote popcorn popper....or a chestnut roaster!  Here's another one!
http://www.etsy.com/listing/87557357/vintage-popcorn-popper-metal-basket-wood (http://www.etsy.com/listing/87557357/vintage-popcorn-popper-metal-basket-wood)

This does appear to be from the 50's era in style and mechanism.

The typical soap savers from 1920's to late 30's all averaged 8 - 11" handles.  This one is 24"...which is generally longer to project over a fire.  Can't tell from the pic if it is a deep basket.  If it is deep....popcorn.  If not...chestnuts!

It is only 2 inches deep and now that I went to the kitchen, smaller than a brown sugar box. It is the same size as a box of Ronzoni Elbow Macaroni.
Way too small for popcorn and chestnut roasters that I have seen are usually solid on the bottom. If you have ever roasted chestnuts they take a while and this would not last that long. Screen over a fire for more than a few minutes will become red hot and melt. This thing shows no sign of ever being in a fire. Maybe it was never used.
I think it is for dropping a small caged creature on someone and the long handle is for you too be at a safe distance when they react. Like a spider, frog or mouse.

O.K. , so maybe a 'collection plate' for a church with a light/swift-fingered bunch of members ?

I'll hafta concede that frogpatch and fancypants trumped my response.

goodern responses, both of them.

I don’t know what its intended purpose was but the “green” wooden handle is usually associated with a kitchen implement.

It might have been for sterilizing something in boiling water like baby bottle nipples & lids or even for boiling eggs.

Whatever, my gut feeling is that its got a connection to “kitchen & water”.

I agree Cogar but why a 2 ft. handle unless an open fire or fireplace ??

Steamer basket for holding something over a pot of water? I thought this would be easy?

Ah, a "steamer", never thought of that, ..... but I was gettin "warm".  ;D ;D

That would have worked great for softening up yesterday's biscuits.

"Sliced bread" musta made that thingy obselete.

Well it has been sitting on my porch for over a year. I was doing spring cleaning and there it was. I still do not think it is a popcorn popper despite the link where someone is selling it as that. It is too small and window screen over any flame will melt and disintegrate quickly. I was hoping maybe some new members have joined that could help of maybe some older ones have new ideas

I think Cogar is right about soap saver !! I have seen others made the same just shorter handles !!  At least the person running the water wouldn`t have to bend over !!

Hi everyone! I figure I would put my sense in hehehe. I think it to flimsy for a soap saver and there would be a better closing mechanism.  This thing is really open all around. I can't remember but it looks so familiar.

My wife thinks its for roasting chestnuts. They are selling on line as popcorn poppers but they are not. I think, even if it were bigger, popcorn would just burn. Any popper I had was enclosed and you put oil in it and the popcorn would steam and pop. I know if you throw a few kernels in a fire they just burn.

Frogpatch, you are thinking an open fireplace flame or a gas burner.

Don't forget, there was 100+ years of cast iron cooking and heating stoves that those "poppers" would work fine on.

This thing hold a pack of ramen noodles nicely with little room to spare. I could stick it in boiling water and enjoy my cheap carbs with no chemical liquid. Kind of small for popcorn don't you think?

It also would have been great to cook/boil something in a large kettle and take it out with ease! :)
