Title: Symbol on Trunk

I can't seem to find the origin of this symbol that is located on an old trunk I purchased. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Looks like a marking one would have at a ranch!

See, I just don't know what it would be considering the amount of travel stamps located on the side. From boat to railroad travels around Saint Louis to Liverpool.

Can't quite tell from your images .... wondering if this was painted upon the trunk ?

My first guess would be nonsense @ this point (John O'Harrah the First) !

It looks like it's painted, but every symbol is the exact same stroke for stroke.

I agree KC !!  Very similar to many ranch brands !! Where did the trunk come from and where are you located ??

It came from a seller in Desoto, MO. That is where I am located as well.

Could have been done by a professional sign painter !! Can you post a pic of the trunk so we can see the style ?? If it were me I would check Brand registries !! Not all states have them or register individual brands but it would be a start !!

Beat me to it Mart.  Missouri does have a brand database but can't find it online. The State does have laws and a database.  Lots of states you can find them and the meaning of brands, how to read them (top to bottom, inside to out, outside to in, side to side, pictures, letters, numbers, a combination, whether they are Freeze brands or Hot Iron Brands.)  There is alot to it...and very interesting.

FYI....did you know that the first known brands were in Egypt (2000BC).  But it has been argued that it started in Sweden in the middle age (476-1492) and spread by the Vikings to England.  So, it's not just here in Texas!!!!  Today we have patents and registrations whereas it all started as Brands/Branding!  (Identification 101 Class!  LOL)

Never got into it quite that much KC !! But it is interesting !! I can imagine a roving cowboy that carried it around ranch to ranch !! Perhaps he dreamed of having his own place and that was what his (hopefully) ranch brand would one day be !!

I guess one could say that the color and weave pattern of a Scottish kilt is also a "brand", right?
