Post by: greenacres on June 03, 2012, 06:01:29 PM
I love, love, love this! I think it's old Litho. I would hate to take it apart. When you see the back you'll know what I mean. I keeping this. I think I found something similar, but I'm not sure. I want to hear your thoughts.

First pic is too dark and second one has too much of a glare from the glass to be able to tell anything !!  Can you try again tomorrow in good light ??

I may have to take out of the frame to get rid of the glare.

Look at the paper through a magnifying glass and see if it is made up of little tiny dots. If it isn't than it is probably an old lithograph. I would guess that it is. I like it.

Do you mean scaley dots? I found the numbers 1232 at the bottom.

It's the from the work of John Frederick Herring Sr.  I've found some reference to it as 'Horses at a Stable Door', another as both that and 'Society of Friends'.

Sorry I can't help you with the litho question  :-[

I had found an ebay listing for another of his works. This is the one that led me to find yours. It's described as a steel plate engraving. Don't know if this helps at all or not.

Thanks so much. I don't know how you did that! That's the right time period, too! If you could see the paper it's yellowed. It's old.

If it was signed would it matter?

I believe there would be some sort of signature and possibly a title of the work, but that would likely have been part of the original engraving. You can buy current reprints that include those......found some art work sites who offer them and their description specifies that detail.

Bonus for me in the 'hunt'......I finally know the origin of my near 40 yr old color reprint that has been hung on the livingroom wall of every house we have lived in.  ;) Picked it up when we first married and fell in love with it. Now I'm pretty sure the picture that graced the center of my mother's old card table was another of the same series of 12 that he did.
