Title: Maddox buffet table - to paint or not to paint?

We're thinking about painting this and using it in a "themed" room, but do not want to lessen its value for the long-term.  And the beautiful wood grain and patina(?) look so rich!  Also, any ideas of its age.  For whatever it's worth, one of the cross "beams" on the underside bears the number "3275 D" in what looks like white paint.

It already looks like it has been sanded, altered????
