Title: What is this dish and makers mark???
Post by: Trugmaker on July 01, 2012, 02:02:57 AM
I have trawled a good Makers Marks book with 1800 marks but cannot find this one. Nor do I know what it is. The handle is a fish, so one would assume caviar - or pate. Would love to know. Anyone have an educated guess??

It's some kind of Stafforshire. There are so many types of crown marks. I'm trying to pin it down.

So pleased you are struggling as well  ;)  :-\ Believe me I have spent a long time trawling the net to no avail, very frustrating as I KNOW this is not c**p. How can a nice piece with a clear(ish) mark not be listed?? And, there are two stamps - one seen here, and one embossed, but to me undecipherable. Plus the the other signed mark in gold that could be a date, but I believe it is much older than the numerals suggest, thus I strongly believe it is an edition number.
Anyway, whatever, I do so appreciate finding this site, which I will visit often as I frequently aquire items that elude me. I could write a book on the items I have found and sold for infinitely way below there value!
The only area I am knowledgeable about is Paperweights, so any questions, fire away!

Hi Trugmaker Beautiful well done piece the most elaborate one I have seen in years -  but not for caviar  :)  What you have is called a  sardine box This may help in your search for a maker,  Prices are high for these little gems and in my opinion a keeper!
Here are some examples : http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=antique+sardine+box

Wendy,, I am curious,, note the even crazing on the bottom,, very regular,, not what I would expect from age alone !! And there is none that I can see on the rest of the piece !!  Ideas ??

Good question mart :) the wear on the fish, lid edges & base edges shows wear for a piece with age (gold paint loss), would need to see closer photos of the outside and inside bottom ,sides & lid.

I saw the wear pattern but thats all I see that indicates age !! Slight paint loss !! Would be odd to not find crazing in other places as well !! The very even patterning of the crackle makes me think chemically done rather than from age !!

Have added a couple of pictures. To enlighten anyone, this definitely old, not repo for certain.
Hope these pictures help. Problem is, I have already put this on eBay, wrongly described as a pate dish. Don't know what to do as it has a couple of bids and I cannot alter the description???? Thank you for the info so far.

If you observe....pate dishes and sardine dishes are widely different in value!  With the sardine being more prized.
Do you have a reserve on your item?
Can you post the listing?

Thanks for the inside pic !! That is much more consistant with age !! I believe you can add to but just not alter the description !!  Try that !!  Unless they changed that !!

That's true Mart....and it will show up under the sardine dish category and thus bump the bidding if the sardine people are looking!!!

I would love to see the listing,, I could always ask a question and relate it to the sardine box !! Bidders do look at that stuff and it might help the price !!

Wow , so helpful here! Thankyou Mart, are you sure this doesn't infringe the rules of this forum to be talking ebay? Taking that chance, the listing is 261056676660
I have established that it is Royal Crown Derby now, but the year of the stamp still eludes me. I know it is very early as the later stamps are much clearer, more uniform and more detailed.

There is no rule at all about asking a question as far as I know !!  Will go now !!

I have ascertained this dish is definitely Royal Crown Derby, but the marks allude everyone??? I emailed royalcrownderby.co. uk with a picture of the stamp - no reply yet.
I have added the extra description, but if I search using the word Sardine box, it doesn't find it. Just have to hope it is found closer to the day. Would appreciate your comments on the listing (if that is allowed in this Forum) the item No. is 261056676660
If I had known of this site, I wouldn't have listed so fast! This pot was in the house where I was born on Ashdown Forest East Sussex. When we moved this was among other items not touched for years in our loft and pulled out to do a boot sale.
The picture below has identical flower patterns and is Royal Crown Derby (not my item).

Thankyou for all your help, I look forward to getting home just to view your responses.

I have added the question about chips or cracks since you didn`t say in the listing !! I said that it appears to be a sardine server !! Now I hope you have in the listing to show all questions !!  Give it a few minutes and check to see if it shows up !!

Its a nice piece but wouldn`t go well with my country stuff !!  Just trying to let bidders know what it was to help your sale !! Will check later and see what the bid is up to !!

Check on the Duesbury porcelain factory mark, Your crown is most like theirs but theirs had a D under the crown. Perhaps the impressed marks are part of the Derby standard !!  Yous does have the crossed batons and numbers !!  Most I have read says there are some variations in most of the factory marks over the years !!

OK, I have learned enough from this magic forum to convince me to re-list my item properly, so I have ended it and will compose another.
I have still not been able to determine age and the stamp 'appears' to be very rare as even the main www.royalcrownderby .co.uk experts cannot find the mark - identical crown, and authenticated, but not including the norm marks underneath!
Just so wish I could offer some semblance of date. Apparently, the main interest in RCD is in the States, so I will offer shipping to there also.

In regard to your sardine box, there appears to be an identical matching piece on eBay at this time.
That can affect the interest of buyers...and values.
Good Luck!

Well Well Well! Clever Rauville! That item is totally identical to my own. So, dissapointed, £79  :( and not even in auction- a buy it now, which tells me the seller knows its value.
I really thought I had something rather special. Oh well, back to saving £1 coins for my holiday spending money. Thankyou all for all your help. I'll be back up in the loft, then back here.
