This is a painting of the Virgin Mary in a wooden display. The painting is on an arched wooden back with two wooden doors that close over it. It measures 11 cm./4.25" across and 16.5 cm./6.5" tall. Any information on this piece would be greatly appreciated.

40 dollars my estimation

You have a retablo! It is a nice one. These are popular imports from Mexico, you see them for sale in the southwest USA.
-
I have known them as a Religious Triptych (3 panels) and or referred to as religious icons from European and Russian countries - and in this case in a folding frame.
Majority of Retablos we see here in Texas are hanging or standup - and not usually a trifold - but I do say that they have them as well.
-
Does a tryptic just have to have three panels? I thought it had to have three paintings. You are right though, this one does not have a drawer like a lot of the retablos do. I bought a retablo similar to this one, one painting, two doors, but it did have the tiny shallow drawer for offerings.

Triptych means 3, but as to whether it must have 3 paintings or just 3 panels, I don't know.
The painting is a copy of a Raphael madonna.
-
A triptych usually has three panels of a single art piece or three related art pieces on individual panels !! Since this is a single art piece on one panel I would not call it a triptych !!
-
These are very common on the Southwest. Very beautiful though not very rare or valuable.
-
I have seen them referred to tryptech even with out a religious painting on the outside panels.

The list goes on.
I also thought at one time it had to have one painting that stretched across all three panels or 3 different painting....but the reference to 3 panels is what seems to have come about since the late 30's onward.
-
Heck,, I would just call it a cabinet myself !!
-
Made me laugh again Mart! It's just folds!
