Title: J. Wedgewood Ironstone Toothbrush Holder
Post by: kidden6968 on July 07, 2012, 05:19:31 PM
Ok another of gram's dressing table items.  I have been trying to find a match to the mark and so far no luck.  I am trying to determine age and authenticity of mark I guess.  Value is always a desire.  Although there are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs, there is quite a bit of crazing and some staining so I am sure that affects it greatly.

Any information would be appreciated.   ;D

Wow the crazing looks so much worse in pictures.  When you see it sitting on a table, it looks perfect!   :-\

As far as I know, crazing isn't a bad thing. As long as it's genuine it's just an indication of age. If it didn't have the crazing there would be doubts to its age. About to search a bit on your mark there, just didn't want you to worry about the crazing :)

What are the measurements on this? I'm not sure it's meant for a toothbrush .

found your mark on a tureen, but haven't learned much yet:

Other than that I'm not seeing this mark...maybe I'm getting the wording wrong. Hopefully someone else pipes in on this one too

Little bit more here.......

I grabbed a screen shot of the relevant paragraph.

Plus a 2007 listing for two pieces with some makers mark descriptions (no pictures)

** J. Wedgwood was JOHN Wedgwood, not the more familiar JOSIAH

I saw some of the same things as you, Sappire. But I couldn't find anything about the blue, just white.

I thought it was white, just a bluish cast from the lighting......could be wrong on that though  ;)

I think it's a brush box!  (googled images of antique ironstone brush box after seeing it mentioned somewhere)

Here's a toilet set from another maker. I snagged a pic of the inside of the brush box.

Aaah, now that makes sense. Wondered why I couldn't find any blue :P

So brush box. Is that for a hairbrush or toothbrush?

Wow thanks for all the replies.  This is actually white - I am a horrible photographer  LOL.  At first I thought it was a butter dish but couldn't figure out the divisions and then I found a toothbrush holder like this.

In any case it measures 7 1/2" long, 3" wide and 3" tall w/ the handle.

Thanks for posting the mark - it would appear that this is from 1841 to 1860.  Anyone have any idea what it might be worth?

It doesn't seem that common. The things I saw were in the $30-$40. range. Let's see what other peoples opinions are.

Thank you Greenacres - you are right - haven't been able to find a match anywhere although I have found several antique toothbrush (some say razor) dishes but different makers.  I am curious as well to see what everyone thinks.   8)

Straight razor won`t fit in this I don`t think !! The two divisions should have two or three grooves in each one and that keeps the brush elevated and keeps water away from the toothbrush after it is rinsed and allows it to dry !!  They were much smaller back then I assume !! You need to see how long this mark was used !!  I think standard toothbrushes came into common use around 1900 !!  But will check on that !!

Hi Mart,

It appears this mark was used between 1841 and 1860.

It looks as though the center spot would be for the brush although there are 3 separate areas that are kind of "scalloped" but not grooves.

Would love to list this but have no idea where to start to value it.

Scallops is what I am talking about,, indentations !!  Get a couple of toothbrushes , the plain flat handled ones at the dollar store and lay them in it !!

I am going to look to see what I have because mine are not the flat handled and they don't fit   :o  In the meantime I did do some research as well and you are right about the time toothbrushes were common household items.  Well wondering then if that could mean something this old would have been owned by wealthier families?  Hmmmm food for thought.

I have no clue what to list this at.

Well, wealthier families could have afforded more knick knacks like this !!

Ok finally getting back to this and yes I tried the plain flat sided toothbrushes and it would definitely hold 3 of them.  Of course I didn't research what toothbrushes from this time period would measure or look like.  I suppose I could do that as well   :-\

In the meantime, does anyone have any further opinions on what I should list this at?  Wondering if everyone thinks the #30 to $40 range.

Thanks for the help everyone - always appreciated!!   ;D

You can try at that but the market is so slow now, if it doesn`t sell, try relisting at $20. !!  People are just not spending much that I have seen !!

Yes I am not having any luck there either - small items selling occasionally but a lot of re-listing.  Anyone having better luck on any other site?
