Title: Trostrup Spoon set
Post by: ikench on July 07, 2012, 11:30:58 PM
I have a set of spoons from J Trostrup of Oslo Norway.  Pictures below show the set.  Two different types of spoons are in the set, I am not sure that they both belong.  The bow contains 11 of the larger spoons.  Two in darker green, two in a very pale green, one white, three black, three brown/red.  The smaller spoons each have a different colored stone on top.

I have tried to find a set like this on the internet.  I have found some spoons that are similar but not in a set like the and especially not with the box shaped like this.

Each of the larger spoons has a marking on it showing it as Sterling Silver (the 925 J Trostrup hallmark).  No markings on the smaller spoons.

I also took them into a local jeweler who told me the set was worth approximately $400.

The box itself is obviously original and is not in the best condition.  Wear along the edges and overall wear top and bottom.  The clasps still work.

Questions I have are as follows:
1.  What is the approximate age of this set?
2.  Do the two spoon types belong in the same set?
3.  Is the $400 valuation noted above accurate?
4.  It would appear that I am missing one of the larger spoons, 11 does not make a set, I am guessing that the complete set should have 12 spoons....is this correct, or is this a Norwegian dozen  ?

Thanks and I look forward to your feedback.

OK, I have pictures, but I am having problems uploading them.  I attach them but when I hit post, nothing happens.  Will continue to work on it and see if I can get them added.

Thanks I will look those up.

The larger spoons do have the J Trostrup mark right at the neck (very small).

I have added some additional pictures as the ones above are not very clear, plus the hallmark.

They are beautiful. Those markings(.925) show they are sterling silver. Very nice spoons!  ;D

Hold on to them...they will only go up in value!  If you do sell....sell prior to Christmas - you get better bids!

Is there a space in the box for each of the large spoons and one for each of the small spoons ??

Yes, space for all of them, but the small spoons do not look like they really belong in the box.

They are two differnt sets. They must have just kept it in one box.

But if there is a space for each,, something had to go in it !! Could be a combo set, the small spoons for tea ( the long handled spoons like that are commonly called teaspoons) for stirring tea in taller glasses !! Enameled spoons are dessert or demitasse spoons for coffee !! (Shorter handles for cups) !!

I will try and find the maker of the smaller spoons to see if they are a part of this set.  When I say there is space they are kind of wedged inbetween the larger spoons.

Thanks for the help.
