My very first post explained that I finally made it to storage to take pics and inventory. That post seems to be lost in cyberspace but in any case I had nothing to clean these pieces with and they have been stored for a while. So excuse the dust and cobwebs LOL please.
I won't repost the first piece of furniture yet in case it shows up.
I will post this dresser for now.
Dresser is on wheels and has 2 small top drawers and 3 full drawers. Measures 20" deep, 39 1/2" tall and 36 1/2" wide. The mirror is 31" tall and 36" at the base.
Again, I don't know anything about furniture - not about types of wood or style, time frame for manufacturing and value so any information is always appreciated.
-
Well, back says it !! Sol Mah,, solid mahogany !! Country style dresser late 20`s, early 30`s !! Less expensive line,, no locks, wood knobs !!
-
Hahahaha I am cracking up - never even thought about that - Assumed it was an inspector that signed off LOL I really need to stay on this board more.
Thanks for the info again Mart :o
-
LOL !! Didn`t think you noticed that !!
-
Mart nailed it! ;D
-
Oh yes !! The number 10 was likely the style number !!
-
I am just wondering, even though this is a less expensive line, what might this dresser go for?
Thanks again!!!
-
Cleaned up maybe $150 on a good day in Missouri :)
-
About the same price here !! Some of the simpler pieces do better than the more ornate ones with heavy carving !!
-
Ok then one more question - what is the best way to clean and shine up these old pieces? I have always wiped with a damp cloth and Murphy's Oil Soap. Then I would use some Old English. Should I be using those products?
-
Murphy`s is ok as long as its diluted pretty much !! It tends to leave a film if you don`t !! But diluted its fine for cleaning then let dry well and apply the Old English,,dark or lemon depending on the wood !!
-
Ah hah! So I was right on track!! See I am learning LOL Thanks Mart!!!! ;D
-
I beg to differ on the Old English. All of those polishes also have a stain that will artificially darken the finish over time while making it look nice and "shiny" in the short run.
I recommend Howard Feed and Wax, or any similar product. Howard has beeswax and orange oil that really nurtures the wood. You only have to apply it once a year at the most. It really helps preserve the wood over the long haul. Between times all you need is a very slightly damp cloth to keep the dust off.
It doesn't have to be Howard, but I've had excellent results with it. Worth tracking down!!
-
If this was a dresser that he wanted to keep I would agree on a different product, or would have told a mix that I made and used when I was restoring furniture !! But this is an inexpensive, dresser that has a finish, likely an old varnish, so feeding the wood might be a problem !! His main interest is cleaning it, making it look as good as possible for sale without spending much !!
-
I'm sure he'll do as you suggested.
My .02, and a chance to throw a good product out there for future reference.
-
I have never heard of it but thats not unusual for this little town !! We don`t have much,, if you can`t get it at Wal Mart or Lowes your SOL !!
-
Ok and I am a she ;D and thanks for all the info. ::)
-
So am I but I am sure it took a while for folks here to figure that out !! That was my error and Ghopper followed suit so I apologize for the both of us !! Sometimes guessing from the names used here is difficult !!
-
No offense taken LOL as a matter of fact I absolutely assumed you were a male until something I saw posted indicated otherwise but not sure what that was. You are right - we create an automatic mental image. :o
-
The "tone" of one's response often outs their gender. ;D ;D
-
Or you can click on their profile...if they've filled it out, that is. ;)
-
I sometimes look at a profile to see where a person is located but I have never found one that was filled out,, !!
-
Here's part of one: ;)
Gender: Male
Age: N/A

I figured this section was blank, so why not (at least partly) fill it in? Evidently I'm in the minority... :)
-
I think you are in the minority !! But at least it gives geographical location !! Thats one thing I have a problem with when new people ask a question about an item !! I just normally search U.S. and if not found start looking elsewhere !! If location is given, we could cut the time down considerably !! Some we can tell but there are some that we can not !!
-
Indeed!
-
Ok where do we fill out a profile? ;D I don't mind - we should start a fill out the profile campaign LOL
-
Just click on your name, then look at "modify profile" on the left.
-
Thanks so much ghopper :D
-
You're welcome, female from upstate New York!
-
HA, ;D I had to smile on that one because ..... to lots n' lots of people, ..... "upstate new york" ..... means just a little ways north of New York City.
Anyway, I've lived in 3 different States, ..... 20+- years of which in Upstate New York (Mohawk Valley - Oneida/Herkimer counties), ... but am now back in my "hillbilly" birth state of West Virginia.
-
So true - upstate really means north of NYC. I grew up in Sullivan County - heart of the Borscht Belt as it was known for many years. Huge resorts known around the world. They are now all closed and falling down. Sad. Currently 2 hours north right outside our State's Capital of Albany - still "upstate" LOL
