Title: Help with Pottery Marks

We have an old vase about 6 inches high and a dark mustard colored with yellow flowers and brown embellishements. It is marked E.F. Co. No. 17 on the bottom. Any help in identifying the marks will be greatly appreciated. It came from my Great Aunts estate in Northern Michigan.

Can you look at the mark on bottom and tell if the ink is shiny or flat and dull !!  Am trying to tell if the mark was put on before the glaze or after !! You may have to turn it a bit in the light to tell !! The number 7 is written European style !!

It appears that the mark is under the glaze and looks to be painted on.

The thing is,, it isn`t a factory mark but a hand written one as an independent potter would do !!  Thats what I think it is,,!! Could not find anything with those initials except one,, that was the manufacturer of the kiln !!

Thanks. Its been in the family for at least 4 generations and everybody was wondering where it was from. Will keep looking.

I could swear that years ago a piece with similar pattern/style was on this site.  That's hundreds and hundreds of posts ago.....just can't recall it.  Oh well.....

I would bet its either German or Dutch !!  Probably first half of 1900`s !! My personal opinion would be late 30`s early 40`s !!  But then again these pics don`t show much !!

I'm thinking earlier, maybe teens or twenties. Arts and Crafts influence.

I'll stick with '20s. It looks like there's some cross-fertilization with the Golden Age of Illustration, i.e. graphic arts.

Its hand painted Pennsylvania Dutch design, that yellow color was popular with those that started over here in America !! It has a glazed foot which makes me think 20th century !!
