Title: Stained Glass Windows
Post by: greenacres on August 01, 2012, 09:02:24 PM
I got these windows yesterday. One window sash is better than the other. I have my work cut out for me. I see varying prices with stained glass windows. It seems smaller pieces with bright colors sell a little bit better. These have purple glass. They are so filthy, I can't tell. I not sure where I would sell them. I may keep one. These are from an old property.

Can't wait to see them after you clean them up!!  I was not getting much color from the photos.

Not to put a damper on things, but my wife restored a stained glass window with wood muntins and it was VERY labor intensive. Basically, she had to take the thing completely apart and rebuild it.

I hope that yours will be much easier!  Rest assured, they'll look amazing after you restore them and have them hanging up.

Oh greenacres  beautiful!!!!! I would be cutting holes in my house asap to place these or have a front door custom made with all the glass placed within (my hubby would be loving that as he builds all my furniture!!)

The one I've done before was a tramsom. It was very colorful. I took two chains and I have it hung in a big glass window. I haven't decided yet how I want to use these windows or window, lol There's a place near me that sells only antique windows and doors. I was thinking of taking the one over and see if he's interested. It's a neat place.

With a little washing, I found out that there's light blue and purple on the perimeter and the cartoque is also light ble and purple. Boy, do they need "TLC".

Is the glass in yours pretty transparent ?? Looks like leaded glass rather than stained glass which is more opaque !!  No huge difference except price !! Those are nice !!

I see some color around the edges.

The glass has patterns in it. I'm not sure about the lead glass, but I know it's probably lead that holds it together. I'll look up and read about lead glass and I'll know more.

Light purple and blue. Didn't see it till I start washing them today. The purple and blue are in the center. I need to get out my clamps and wood glue to clean better.

They seem to be be lead and stained glass, but what is different from what I see are all the different patterms in the glass. Does that mean stained glass is clear or patternless?

The term leaded glass just refers to the lead that holds them together !! Lots people refer to the transparent glass like yours as leaded glass just to separate it from stained glass which is more opaque !! Both can be used in stained glass panels to allow light to accent different parts of a piece !!

Look at this one !! Note the difference in the glass itself !!

I see what your saying. What is the difference in value? Is one newer or older? Or is it all about pattern and color?

Not everyone could afford the more expensive glass like the above pic !!  But they could afford the ones like yours !!  It kept the middle class stylish without breaking the bank !! Value all comes down to the difficulty in making the window, size, type of glass and how ornate the pattern is as well as who made it on some stained glass windows !!

Restored I think the pair should still be worth $300-$400 at least.

I think the "pattern" you are referring to was done so for the purpose of "diffusing" or "distorting" the light, thus preventing one from "clearly" seeing through the glass.

Leaded glass is leaded glass, meaning it is afixed in place via a lead perimeter or molding, ..... regardless of whether the glass that was used is clear, rippled, stained, painted, acid-etched, sand-blasted and/or colored glass.

If it looks like a "leaded glass" panel ..... and has any "color" to it, ...... most every one will call it a "stained glass" window, door or lamp shade.

I'm hoping the colors pop more when I clean them up better. I think it will help in the sale.

I want to get the wood back in shape and remove the paint and clean. How do you over restore. I'm not going to change anything.

If you are going to sell them, Just clean them up,, soap and water, a little windex !! Chances are whoever buys them will put them in another frame anyway !! If you get paint on the leading it just makes it harder for them !!

No I'm not going paint. I just want to take of the paint off on the glass and the one I'm keeping I want the natural oak wood. From what my husband says they were never meant to be painted to begin with.

You mean you are going to split the pair ??  Sell one and keep one ??

I see nothing wrong with cleaning the paint off the glass yet keeping the sashes painted with a new coat. Many windows were like that, and it would make the restoration process considerably easier. Just make sure all the lead cames/muntins/mullions are sound!

Not sure. My husband ready to kill me with all of my things. ;D I'll probably keep both and hang them. I have two places for them. But if I don't do it quickly and let it sit I'll hear about it, lol. He still has furniture from that house to bring home. I'm in competition for his equipment and tools and he's says I'm taking up to much space. We had this debate yesterday, lol I always win. ;D

It would be a shame to  split them !!  For one thing if you ever decided to sell them,, restorers of old houses would pay well for a matching pair,, singles are easily found and pretty cheap !!

I just got wood glue on my hands. (Monster glue) I washed them and it didn't work. Hand lotion was the answer!
