Title: Victorian(?) Glass biscuit barrel?
Post by: Astro on August 06, 2012, 01:51:34 AM
My Nana passed away last year in her 90's (I live in New Zealand) and I have been given this beautiful thing. From my research it looks to be a biscuit barrel. It has EPNS stamped on the lid. Under the lid is a bee stamp with 'L' and 'B' in each wing (see photo). I think it's electroplated silver, going by this website (which doesn't give a name of the maker): http://www.silvercollection.it/electroplatesilverUNI.HTML (http://www.silvercollection.it/electroplatesilverUNI.HTML)
It has the numbers/ letters 'R413701' scratched in to the glass at the bottom of the barrel on the inside. My Mum thinks it may be depression glass - I'm not so sure.

I was really hoping for a name from who made this and what year approx - and if I'm right that it's a biscuit barrel. Thanks!  :)

Biscuit barrel is right. Looks like early 20th century to me.

Nice one!

Thanks for your reply. I have spent 4 hours now trying to search the little 'bee' mark to no avail. Adelphi appears to have used bees as their mark along with Christofle but nothing like this mark. A similar bee appeared on Benedict Manufacturing Co things but with a diamond around it and no letters in the wings.

Any ideas?

Tough one I too have not found your bee mark I would say your piece (biscuit barrel) dates from  very late 1800's early 1900's. I  Also check some jewelers marks and have still come up empty. May need to try searching glass patterns not an easy task as there are Millions. Will break out the old books tonight.
