Title: Cool Old Ice Cream Scoop Fails the Lead Test!

Dangit! I was looking forward to creating fancy little ice cream desserts on my frilly china plates, but it was not to be. I always lead test my metal kitchen gadgets and I am glad I did. Unfortunately, this neat, early ice cream scoop tested positive for lead. I mean REALLY positive, instant bright red. I guess this one will have to be a wall hanger!

That's the safest thing to do, but if the scoop is covered in some kind of sealant, and the sealant is not broken, then you'd be OK to use it.

We live in an older home that is FULL of lead paint. But we don't worry when the kids come by, because there is no blistering or flaking, so the lead is sealed behind newer paint. If all lead paint was eliminated from home environments then there would be no old houses left standing, since lead could easily be found in all paint before 1978.

In other words, if there is some kind of sealed surface between the lead and you, then you can go about your business.  :)

Hey!! I could cover it in tinfoil or a couple of layers of plastic wrap couldn't I?!!!

I guess you could!  But really, I was wondering if there is some kind of coating on the scoop?

Cool Tails and being really full of lead you know it is the real deal  :) plastic wrap would work, try press and seal that way you can get a smooth surface and it will stick to the scoop!

You only need to use 1 layer of plastic wrap and you are fine!  When I was full time chef and would go speak to women's groups they would always ask about large decorative platters that they wanted to use that were marked that they weren't food safe.  Would tell them to just put 1 thickness/wrap of plastic or aluminum foil. If you are going to be using a dry food (like cookies/cake) a decorative paper works great.  In your case plastic wrap works great as well!!!!

Still it looks great hanging there!
