I recently bought this table at an auction,it was a bit of an impulse buy,and a "i,m not going home without something buy"..i did,nt pay a lot for it,...and infact did,nt get a very good look at it until after the hammer fell, its 87cm long x 56cm wide x 5cm thick and it has 2 x copper inserts in the top,the larger of the 2 measures 33cm x 30cm,and the smaller one is 15cm x 30cm, the lower part of the table measures68cm x 37cm,the wood has a large open grain and it as a high gloss finish,In one side there are 3 drawers,2 x small and 1 x large,..i,ve tried searching the net,to find out more about it,but as yet have had little success,i,d also like to know if it is an antique, or what its high end value might be,

I am sorry I dont know anything about it, but I wanted to say that I absolutely see why you bought it, What a lovely piece! Im sure someone here will be able to help you ;)
-
Look under it and see if anything is written also look at bottom of drawers !! There is so much of a glare can`t tell a lot !! Can you take some close up shots as well as one of the dovetails on drawers !! Does not look old but does look like quality made !!
-
Looks fairly modern to me...in that it looks like it came into fashion with the door craze that has hit within the past 20 years or so.
-
Thats the most unusual wood I have ever seen !! Resembles oak but if it is,, its a variety I am not familiar with !!
-
Definitely not old, though it has a craftsty appearance. If you find out what that wood is, let us know.
-
Could be south american tigerwood !!
-
Hi all, thank you for your replies,On closer inspection,it would appear that it is as you have all said,it is not old,the wood is in my opinion,a veneer, that has been laid over a base carcass, the joints on the drawers are re-bated butt, there are no makers marks, the copper inserts, are real copper 1.2mm thick, they have been made using 3 parts, and the corner joints have been folded over,I did some searching last night, and from what i found,it may be a Planter Table,...although an old friend, suggested that maybe the inserts were for putting ice in,to keep bottle,s of wine cold,...but after a more detailed inspection of the inserts,i would discount this theory, as the joints, are not water tight,my gut feeling is,..it is perhaps of far eastern origin,...Burmese?,...Indonesian?,i will keep searching and if i do find one or anything that,s similar, i will let you know,

I found this one,so i think i,m on the right track, for it being a Planter Table???

coffe tables were not in general use until late 29th century but it looks good quality and would have been expensive , probably made in last 30 yrs regards
-
29th? I'd say it was from the late 28th century, at least! ;)
-
The item may have also been used in conjunction with a hibachi .
At the risk of being contrary , I'd say that it dates prior to the 27th century .
-
Ya think ???? LOL Those typo`s again !!!

If you made me a reasonable offer for it, I could send it to you, then you could enjoy it even more.....
-
I am afraid that shipping it to Texas would blow my garage sale budget !! But it is nice !!
-
Hi Mart, would it surprise you to know, that in 2010,i shipped a 1/6th scale radio controlled model tank,...big boys toy,to California, the crate size was 66in x 30in x 30in it weighed 196lbs,its value was £3200,..I sent it with FedEx and it only cost £269,fully insured,it was collected from my home at 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon, and it was delivered to the buyer on the following Tuesday at 3.30pm,...so it would,nt cost an arm or a leg to ship a coffee table....
-
Not an arm and a leg, just an arm =)
-
Thats still more than my garage sale budget,, and then, where would I put it ?? I am wall to wall now !!
