Title: 1970s Ethan Allen Coffee Table
Post by: MonkeyToe on August 20, 2012, 12:45:59 PM
Looking for advice on what to value this coffee table at and also what the best venue would be to sell it through (haven't had much luck on Craigslist). I know it is Ethan Allen, 1970s, and solid wood. It has a small circular scratch on it and it is missing one of the pegs that hide the screws for the hinges.

Sadly, about $20.00 at a garage sale around here.

Wow. I'm really surprised at the value of this piece. Thankfully I didn't pay much for it and even 20 would be a small profit, but I would have though a name brand, solid wood piece would have retained a little value.

Unfortunately, by the 1970s Ethan Allan was coasting on the name. The furniture, which sold in great quantity, has not endured well, and there is virtually no demand for it now.

ghopper1924, in my neck of the woods the original Ethan Allen pieces are still in demand.  Sturdy, well made and lasting generation to generation.

Then you have those styles (although well made/sturdy) they made that majority do not care for - but there are still a few.  I believe in time pieces like these will have a following and they will regain some demand.  AND at that time, there won't be that many around because as bigwull said...majority were made into firewood, etc.  This is how the market goes.

When was the original Ethan Allen sold?

Every piece I've seen, and of course there may be some unseen bias at work here, seems to be from in and around the 1970s. It may still be functional, but I've seen actual cases where it cannot be given away, and it ends up going to pieces curbside until it is picked up by scavangers or the trashman.

Just sayin'.

Started  asa housewares manufacturer in 1932.  Bought a bankrupt furniture factory 1936 (Beecher Falls, Vermont) but didn't establish the name "Ethan Allen" for its early-American furniture until 1939.
