Title: Old Love seat
Post by: e.mckenna730 on August 21, 2012, 12:23:50 PM
Hello,

I acquired an old love seat that I am trying to get a better understanding about. There are some indications that it is an older piece but I can't seem to figure out the time period or the history, even the wood. From closer inspection it looks like it has been refinished. There are some areas where the stain is reddish and others where it is blackish. I took a look at the screws and nails. The line in the screws are off center and look like they have been handmade, same with the nails, they are uneven sometime squarish. I was wondering if this was of any value or for the dumps.

Thanks!

Its a beautiful little empire revival setee, mid to late 1800`s !!  Possibly could have been refinished  !! Is the darker tone just under the fabric ?? Or is it on any of the exposed wood  !!

My .02: It's probably mahogany or walnut, made ca. 1910.

Reason I dated it as a little earlier is that its a bit dainty compared to what was produced after 1900 !!

Ah ha!

I'd say 1920s a bit late; parlor sets were pretty much a thing of the past by then.

Still, a very nice piece!

Wow!

Thanks for your input. This is the second thing I inquired about on here and both times I was given some great insight! Without getting it reupholstered, what do you think the resale value of it is? If there is none, no biggie. I see that it won't be much especially since it will need to be reupholstered. Maybe $125?

In Missouri that would probably be the most you'd get.

This one is really throwing me off stylistically. But it sure is beautiful! That screw has an off-center slot in the head, which looks very early. I am going to guess more like 1830-1860? Anyone else have any opinions? I'm not an expert!

Sorry to be gone so much, been really busy! :) I would say we're both in the same neighborhood with this one, mid 1800s and definitely not trash! Any more opinions on value? I'd say $400-$500-ish? Antiques in my area tend to be a bit more expensive than other places, especially if this one really is pre-1860.
